new engine
If you guys were to get a new engine where would you go? I want a new engine for my coupe but I don't want to give away the engine currently in the car. I want to use it as a self educational tool so I can learn more about working on the little beast.
Thanks for any info you guys can provide |

Re: new engine
Buy a junk engine stuck pistons preferred. tear it down and get familiar. Best if it has starter, Generator, water pump, flywheel and clutch. It's all parts for the shelf. Try not to go over $200.00 Nice if no cracks but there is never a guarantee.

Re: new engine
That is what I did with my car. I pulled the motor and put another one in while I rebuilt the old one. I was still able to drive the car while I work on it.

CB919ER:
Over the past 30 plus years I have had 6 engines completely rebuilt - 2 each by three different rebuilders. AER in Skokie, IL when I lived there, Ron Miller in Shandon, OH and James Rogers in Asheville, NC. All of them did a good job. Call or PM me if you would like to discuss which of them or other that I would choose for my next engine. I helped you get your car running earlier this year in Seymour, TN. Good rebuildable engines are getting hard to find and the price for cores is going up. Vic |

Re: new engine
Is the serial number that the car is registered with get restamped on a rebuilt engine or is this not an issue?

I have seen Ron Kelley and his engines at Chickasha and would like one but for his good stuff you really have to pay. If you want to keep the price below $1K per cylinder one needs to look elsewhere. Vic |

Re: new engine
My car is already registered. I had a title and paperwork so I went into the DMV and got a new title and registration. They never even looked at the car.

Re: new engine
Stamp the engine numbers on STEEL, make a rubbed tracing of it & say, "YEP, that's the number on the frame, saw it with my OWN Eyes"!

Re: new engine
Sounds like you'll be paying for 2 engines. One for temporary and one for the road when all is done. That's about the price of another car with a good running engine. What to do?

Re: new engine
When I wrecked my A , the first thing the insurance agent did was verify the number matched his records.

Re: new engine
In Canada there is only a number on the left side of the block . Nothing on the frame or on the cowel .

Re: new engine
Shipping could kill you but I would recommend Go Deil Garge outside Albany NY ...you could buy a motor outright ....

Re: new engine
I bought my restored Model A Town Sedan from a gentleman in upstate New York. During the restoration process, he made a tracing of the number on the frame, which he gave me when I bought the car, and it does also match the engine number. When I registered the car in California, I used AAA, and took along that tracing to show the agent whom registered my car, which definitely helped.

Re: new engine
Yep, I took pictures of the number and also tracings when I applied, and they used both for the records.

Re: new engine
Jim off hand I'd guess about $4,000. Lay aside 4500 to be sure. I think that price there abouts includes a balancing job also.

Re: new engine
Agree...$4,500 for a nicely rebuilt Model A Engine. Almost everyone uses adjustable valves these days. Ernie in Arizona.

Re: new engine
We've got one for $3800, Complete, Never run, built by a recognized local builder. It's going to Hersey soon. Will start it up for you if you say when you want to see it. Just say the word!
