Default Lower bearing race in 2 tooth steering

I knocked the lower worm bearing race out of my 2 tooth steering box. How is the best way to get a new one fully seated in the bottom the the steering gear box. The video from the Diablo A's doesn't show putting the new one in.

Line it up, then set the old race on top of it upside down. Then use a brass drift and a hammer and tap the race into place. Remove the old race from on top of it. Rod

Thanks for the reply. That method did not occur to me.

Sometimes to help in removing the old race when you are done. Lightly grind the OD of the used race. I have one ground down slightly in the drawer with my punches. Since I have rebuilt several it seems to be a good think to keep around so I don't have to grind one down every time. Rod

I will grind the old one and use it tomorrow for the installation. Thanks for the tip.

Put the race in the freezer over night will help.

I've always done it just as Rod said, but the bolt/nut Kurt mentioned would be safer.

When using a hammer and punch on the bearing, be sure to wear a face shield or at least safety glasses. I know two people who have lost an eye when they were using a hammer and punch to drive a bearing.

Got it in using Rowdy method. Ground the old one for easy removal. Lined up the new one put the old one upside down on top then added a couple of heavy washers. Then used an arbor press to get it most of the way in. Then used a punch on top of the old race to finish setting it.

Got it all back together and adjusted. It has no slack at the center position and no binding. I think it is going to steer so much better.

And be careful with that grinder. A couple weeks ago I was cutting off a piece of angle iron, thought I was all set because I was wearing my glasses but a minute piece of steel snuck under the lower front of the glasses and went under my upper eyelid. After a couple of hours in pain I went to the emergency room and the doc. removed it but there was a rust stain on the eyeball so I had to see an ophthalmologist asap to remove the stain then it was a week and a half on antibiotic drops. Doc. said steel rusts fast on eyeballs due to the salt in tears. Watch those eyes and wear goggles.

In 2006 I got a sliver of steel in my left eye at work. I had my safety glasses on. Ended up having my eye ball drilled 3 times to get it all out. Still have a small rust stain left. Drove from here to Merdo, SD. to Corky Hayes's auction with my eye diolated after the last drilling session. Rod
