Could be valves or lifters.

Are you using MMO?

We have had some engines over the years that ran OK but made ticking sounds.

I always try the same thing first. Change oil, using 20w-50 Walmart oil, add one blue bottle of STP to engine oil as the last 1/2 quart, add Marvel Mystery Oil to gas. Drive car.

If it’s just sticking valves, or if you have an engine with some ware, this could help. Enjoy.

Try to listen to the distributor area. That shaft may be rattling.

I have an engine that rattles also. We actually got it to stop for a while by moving the distributor body around when the engine was running (and shocking the SH*T out of myself in the process!!) What do you suggest I could do to stop the shaft from rattling?

There’s a difference between rattling and ticking.

Ruthie, do you have a distributor with the one piece shaft or one with the two piece shaft? The one piece shaft has a tendency to get bent.

I have had a single shaft distributor that was making a lot of noise. Replaced with a rebuilt two piece shaft and all is good.

90 year old car, any moving part could need rebuilding or replacement.

Is it mostly around the distributor? That is pretty weird to have the distributor body making noise.

Get a harbor freight stethoscope and replace the metal end with heater hose. ( or just try heater hose). You will be able to pinpoint the area it’s coming from. MMO or seafoam is a good idea

I have checked valves, valve guides, distributor.
Seems al to be ok.
So I removed oilpan and found at no.2 much sideplay.
When pushing rod no2 there is a metallic noise.
The other rods seem to be ok.

What can I do?
Change rod bearing?
Change co
Is there a possibility to reduce sideplay?

Oof... sorry to hear that. Did you check the oil pan for bits of babbitt? Pictures could help.

Mine was beginning to make a similar noise to yours, now I'm getting a new engine

If you have the ability to remove the engine and inspect all the bearings thoroughly I would start there before attempting to repair anything. Hopefully you don't find what I did...

Either way, something is worn. If in line with the crank, then the wrist pin isn’t holding.if perpendicular, then worn Babbitt.

Then the wrist pin lock isn’t holding or there. That keeps the rod from moving sideways. You’ll need to pull the piston and check. It’s possible the wrist pin is scoring the cylinder. I had a flathead that the pin came loose, and it had to be sleeved.

I think it sounds like a manifold gasket leak at ONE Exhaust Port.

Just for kicks, check to see if your crank Polly is loose. Just move the fan blade. It should be tight. It’s easier if you do this when the engine is not running !!!

Saw a Guy stick his finger in an Electric Fan, to see if it had PLASTIC or STEEL Blades??? His finger nail is FINALLY growing back!
