Default 56 f100 o/d transmission tail shaft cross member support

Kultulz, any idea why Ford didn’t have a cross member support on the o/d transmission tail shaft on the 56 f100? I always wondered about that. Had a 55 custom line that had one.

FORD mounted it's LT engines in a different manner than the cars of the period. The rear engine support(s) is on the bell-housing. The front support is somewhat like a BIRD but more substantial and not requiring the BIRD side stabilizer mounts.

Did I hit it right?

I guess you you hit alright, always thought that is a big, long, hunk of heavy metal hanging off the bell housing with no support on the tail shaft but its never given me any problems.

If you think about it, a mount @ the transmission tail housing will also put stress on the output shaft assy. The output shaft is supported by the output shaft brng (main case) and the tail-shaft bushing along with the integrity of the actual tail-shaft extension housing.

There will also be varying degrees of stress regarding the driveshaft design, whether one or two piece driveshaft.

As to the front mount, it (the style) was done as a result of using a straight front axle in those years. A cross-member would interfere with axle movement.

I hope I answered that correctly and understandably.
