Default chasing threads...

prepping the block after re-checking valve lash and after chasing several head bolt holes noticed some debris on the Q-tip I inserted and checked with my flashlight.

The pictured telescoping magnet pulled out a lot more than what is on that rag, and some pieces pulled out of the water port on the right of the block.

Something else to do when cleaning out threads and such

I gently run a drill in the holes to break up any crud at the bottom blow it out then run the tap in. Just running the tap in packs anything at the bottom tighter.

That's a great tip Red, I have a few of those angled metal pics almost like the one's your dentist uses on your choppers.

You gotta figure these heads were removed a lot to de-carbon the head and valve train, being tidy sometimes was not a priority and these holes are full of it.

Lots of that packed carbon gets pretty hard! Also to add, the old standby, put the head on without gasket and make sure all the bolts go down all the way.
