Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hey Vic,
I’ve enjoyed your posts. I’m still reading. Last week I came across a brief discussion of the right spark plug to use in our flathead engines. I’ve been using Champion D16 in my 34 cabriolet with original aluminum heads. You recommended Autolite 437. I rounded up 8 437 plugs but they are too small.. Am I getting the wrong 437 plug? Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Richard, the Autolite 437 is the plug I use on '39 to '53 Flatheads equipped with after-market aluminum heads. Sorry if I didn't make that clear in my previous post. The plugs in your '34 are 18mm. I'm not sure if Autolite makes a plug suitable for your car. Vanpelt Sales website recommends Champion 7 (18mm). I'm not a fan of Champion plugs but, if that's all that are available...

Vic, I just bolted on the Pete & Jake's kit on the front of my 1941 1/2 ton. Easy bolt on job.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Happy Easter. Here is another reason for celebration, at least for me. The 2019 Cigar City Concours d'Elegance website is now on line. We still have a few things to tweak and we'll be adding to our sponsors page, etc. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Here's some photo magic done by a friend of mine. Me in the '39 LZ Convertible Club Coupe sitting at one of the forever red lights in Tampa. Proof that when properly maintained, Flatheads don't overheat. 😉

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Today my Flathead follies continued, I was able (without encountering too much difficulty), to remove and disassemble the drivers side front door latch mechanism from the '39 CS, in order to replace the broken spring. All of the catalogs and actual Ford reference books I have show a latch with two springs and a "dog leg" piece protruding from the bottom of the latch assembly. Wouldn't ya know it, my car, had a different latch assembly! 😲 The body number on my '39 is 1507 out of 3561 built so its right in the middle of the production run. It's not surprising that Ford would make "running changes" to various assemblies however, I have not been able to find any information on the latch in my car.🧐 Anyway, I disassembled and cleaned everything and, as luck would have it, during the reassembly, three of the four tabs that hold the moving part of the assembly to the faceplate, snapped off! Color me not at all happy.😟 Now I'll have to go to plan "B". Problem is, I don't have a plan "B"! Several of the parts suppliers for antique Fords have a re-popped door latch assembly in their catalogs however, I would bet that they are made off-shore and most likely are not up to the level of quality of the original Ford Part. As they say, the saga continues.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hi Mark, great to hear from you, we've missed you at the Bash the last few times. We're looking at the first week in March of 2020 for the next one. I've been busy with the Cigar City Concours d'Elegance so I haven't been that involved with setting up the Bash. We are now calling it the Winter-Fest but you won't need a jacket, just sun tan oil. Hope you can make it in 2020.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
IIRC,always a good question to ask these days,it's easy to tell if a throwout bearing has gone bad because it only knocks when you hold the clutch pedal to the floor. Or maybe it stops knocking when you hold the clutch pedal to the floor? The good news is it is one or the other, and it will only take you a minute to figure it out. |
