New 8BA unforeseen delay.

I recently have had to make a procedural change in how I make my Model A blocks, so that change is going to take time away from completing the 8BA design. Since the change was already in my mind it won't delay things too long. I am very far along on the 8BA design but not quite ready to go to the core shop.

I am also in the process of moving out 2 CNC machines and bringing in a new one that has better capacity. It should be here the first week of August.

I will be trying to get 8BA blocks sampled asap.

I just looked at Tod's initial post about this; it was on May 5 of this year! I think we can cut him a little slack to while he improves his Model A block! All of this is less tha 3 months? When do you sleep, man?

The Motor City project is a good example of how long things can sometimes take and how far off the path with changes to the design it can get to.

It takes what it takes and it sounds like you're getting set up to a point that will get you there with better results.

I have some process changes I need to make on the Model A block casting as cores for making a 5 main version are about to come in, as are cores for my new OHV head, and a dual plug Model A head. Pictured is the new machine that will replace 2 older ones. Plus, normal production needs to continue while I do everything else.

The newer Mazak FH680 has 80 tool magazine, CAT 50, availability for adding more pallets, larger memory than the other 2 machines combined, and is quicker. I didn't want to do this right now but I need to while I can get a good deal.

Thats a good machine - especially for steel and cast iron . . . thanks for the update and I'm "on board" with this project - anything I can help with - just ask. Also, I will put a deposit down once we're closer to the "end game".

You mentioned dual plug heads. I think the location of the spark plug in a flathead would best be served by placing it in the center of the transfer area and at the same angle. When flow benching The flathead I made up several combustion chambers to observe the affect of the transfer area on flow. The best flow was in the 10 to 12 degrees similar to the stock EAB head. However this reduced the CR and was only effective in the upper RPM range. Reducing this to 8 degrees provided a higher CR with affecting the flow that much. Also the exit of the transfer area must be taken into consideration. If the plug were installed in the center and at an 8 degree angle, a power tip plug could be used and much better fuel economy could be had.

The dual plug heads are for the Model A. Snyder needs 20 of them for airplane guys. I will also offer them in iron for street guys.

There must be some model A Pietenpol fans out there. He started out using Model T or Ace 16-valve engines but the Model A had a lot more power with not much change in weight. He did have to design it with a long tail on them though to keep the weight & balance within range. They could run a dual mag on there but they might have some other form of dual ignition. It's mostly for reliability since it only gives a flathead slightly better performance.

That Motor City engine may end up being a one off. They don't seem too interested in doing anything but showing it to folks at shows & swap meets.

Things are getting back on track. I finalized the foundry equipment purchase yesterday and the new CNC will be at the shop in a week or 2.

Additional tooling is in place for machining Model A blocks and the new machine will allow me to machine 8BA blocks at the same time. The model is coming along again.
