What is best way to install outside trim to my newly painted 40 Ford 2 door standard sedan ? After using prescribed clips ,do you fill the holes with a silicon type sealer ?

A ball of 3M strip calk strategically formed around the spring clips etc. is all I ever used. Silicone presents a mess and removal problem.
