Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
I watched an episode of Columbo being filmed at my hotel in California. His car was in the shot, and they had two identical cars on hand. Both cars had the same scratches, dents and faded touch up spots duplicated. It was amazing how identical they were. I watched other movies being filmed, and usually the main focus car had a double standing by.

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
Sorry, it was a long time ago that I saw the movie, and John Waynes westerns are all similar in story, it was probably a different movie, but it was a western with him in it, that was made in the 50's/60's.

1960's radial tires.
When the move Bullit came out the Mustang was wareing the new Firestone F100 radial tires. In 1968 I bought a set for my 1967 Plymouth Barracuda fastback. The car handled well but the tires did not ware well, 15,000 miles or less. The next set of radials came from Sears in 1969 and lasted till I traded the car. |

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
In the Burt Reynolds movie White Lightning he is driving a 1972 Ford Galazy. As he goes down the road, he is shifting gears on the floor, but as he parks the car, he puts the car in park on the column. DUH!

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
I am not obsessive about car details in movies, but I did notice a TV degauss it self twice about 10 seconds apart in the movie "The Ring". Degaussing is controlled by time and would not happen near that fast.
Sure, the movie was about a haunted VHS tape that kills people and the only unrealistic part that annoyed me was tv's "turn on" sound being wrong. |

Kansas City
Robert Altman's jazz-scored film explores themes of love, crime, race, and politics in 1930's Kansas City as well as lots of period cars. Check it out here: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ka...?trkid=2361637 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116745/

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
Years and years ago, when I was still a teenager, my family visited Livingston, Montana. I think that's where A River Runs Through It was set. Anyhow, I vaguely recall they had a museum there with a little display about the movie. I believe there was a Model T there and they erroneously identified it as a 1928 model. Oh well, perpetuating ignorance. The area is beautiful and I still liked the movie.

1960's Radial tires,
When the movie Bullit came out the Mustang was using the new Firestone F100 radial tires. At the time I had a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda fastback with the factory fitted 2 ply belted tires. I brought a set of the Firestone's that greatly improved the handling but the soft tread compound sure did not last very long. After about 15,000 tire miles I replaced them with a set of Sears Michelin radials that lasted till I traded the car in 1971 with 90,000 miles and still showing good usable tread. John |

I had my 1927 Chrysler in Clint Eastwood's movie "The Changeling" and yes, he does insist on correct year cars. Also had a chance to gab with him for a few minutes. Great director and actor.

"Fried Green Tomatoes" has a Model A Pickup crash and sink in a pond or river. When they pull it out it's a 1932-34 Ford pickup.

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
I get a kick out of the mistakes made on tv and in movies with cars and such. How about jet contrails in the sky on Little House On the Prarie. Bad camera angles. The one that comes to mind for me was in the tv series Hiway Patrol with Brodrick Crawford. Mathews would be peeling rubber leaving the shoulder of the road in a hot persuit driving a 57 Chevy then the camera would switch to the inside of his car and there was a wide sweeping 57 Ford speedometer. Low budget but one of my favorite shows as a kid.

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
How about ones where cars burn rubber and squeal their tires on dirt roads?
I forget where I've seen that but I know I have. |

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
Ever notice every time a Jeep comes to a stop, in every movie and tv show, the brakes squeel?

Another one I remember was the last episode of M.A.S.H. (I think Honeycutt) was riding away on an old Harley Davidson and they dubbed in the sound of a Yamaha two-cycle.

Any movie set in "the good old days" drives me nuts with the clean, polished, no dents, no rust period vehicles lining the streets.

Re: Obsessive about car details in movies.
DEAN ....................
I think that is more of the fault of the owners, than the movie directors. When a person has his car picked for a movie, the first thing he does, is to totally detail it out. I read, somewhere, that a movie director, had all of the fully detailed out cars, sprayed down with Fullers Earth, to give them the old "dusty" look. Don't remember what movie, wish I did. I bet a lot of owners sure were P.Od. about that ! MIKE |
