It appears the truck may have fallen through the ice on frozen lake.

Yep, most of these GAZ trucks were fitted with B blocks from the mid-1930s onwards although A blocks kept on being made and fitted. The B block trucks are referred to as GAZ-MM.

Re: Interesting project
This truck has been restored; many hundreds of excellent photos of before, during and after the restoration are here:
https://vk.com/albums-75719986 in the link above there is folder with a catalogue of parts for GAZ AA/MM, direct link is here: https://vk.com/album-75719986_200751383 The very sad thing about this truck is that when it went down, they did not make it. RIP.

RIP.[/QUOTE] Wow, that is an impressive restoration they did on that GAZ MM. Looks like they even found parts of one of the soldiers too: If only he could talk! Yes, RIP. According to the license plate on the front, it states "GAZ-MM truck. It was built in July 1941. During the liberation of Novgorod, January 19, 1944, it went under the ice of the Kopka River. It was raised from the river bed on August 15, 2014. Restored by restorers of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve and the team of OAO "261 Repair Plant" on April 6,2015." Brad in Maryland |

Re: Interesting project
After doing research they believe they know the exact date and names of the two people that went down in the truck. One was a woman. Imagine the terror of their last moments.
Don't know; but if they had known what they were going to find it may have been better to leave the truck where it was as war grave. It's a dangerous game driving a truck on ice...if you don't jump away immediately or there's no-one nearby to help you, falling into freezing water in heavy clothes you're in big trouble. If at night even worse. It explains the open door policy the of drivers.

Re: Interesting project
Can someone help me (correct me if I'm wrong). When you look at the parts break down, and maybe the one picture. Is there an oil filter on the GAZ B motors? Look on the side cover behind the carburetor.
Thanks |

They did have an oil bath air filter. My guess is the hose would have been rubber rather than what was used here. I love these "KKAZ" carbys. There are a couple of guys in the USA on this forum who have one in their collection...but they will not sell!!!

Re: Interesting project
According to the 1949 GAZ MM parts book, it is a "Crankcase Ventilation" which includes a filter and an exhaust pipe and is a characteristic of a GAZ MM engine (note the part numbers begin with the letter "M-"). Here is a photo of the relevant parts (Subgroup 1014):
According to the parts book, the conduit from the carburetor to the air filter was originally a solid (metal) pipe with rubber fittings on either end (between the pipe and the carb and between the air filter and the pipe). ....and check out the shape of the engine compartment fuel line (180 degree bend at the end) in the parts schematic above.
