Default Kingpin bushing driver

I’m looking for a part number for a commercially available kingpin bushing driver. Or measurements so I can turn one on the lathe.

I just ordered new pins and bushings. I know I can measure those. I am trying to order or make the tool before the parts arrive.

Thank you.

Don't you mean a reamer? If properly fitted, you don't need to "drive" them in with a BFH. "The devil made me do it."

Wait until you have the new bushing. If you have a metal lathe, this shouldn't be a problem, make a driver slightly smaller than the OD of the bushing and step it down to fit snug the length of the ID of the bushing. I doubt you can buy one that is exactly what you need. I made mine in less than 10 minutes.
The cam bearing driver I made surprisingly also drives out SBC cam bearings.

If you have the old pin, and an empty spindle, you should have all the specs you need

Thanks. - my issue is the truck is in a garage away from home. I thought about those measurements afterwards. It’s close to work, and I’m off for Thanksgiving. I was just trying to keep the project rolling while not there.

Either way it will get done. I did get an adjustable reamer. I guess I’ll take the drive and go measure. I think a nice stepped driver hardened and blued would look good in my tool collection.

I believe the size is .814. Some of the old reamers have a bushing driver on the other end. I've purchased a KD bushing driver kit that has approx. 15 different drivers in it. There are drivers in the kit for all of the bushing found on an old Ford. Well worth the $25

Generally speaking, adjustable reamers are not for king pin bushings. Is it long enough to go thru both bushings at once to make them straight with each other? Usually, a real reamer for this job has a cutter on the end to rough cut a smaller hole for a pilot, thru both bushings, then the .814 cutter hits the first bushing, then the last part of the reamer is .814 to act as the guide while the second bushing gets cut, to make it all straight.

I've used a bushing driver set for this stuff for a long time and never had a problem with the bushing deforming. The set I have is Snap On but they aren't the only ones available. If you cut a driver head, cut it for the new bushing ID as delivered or leave it loose. The bushing is smaller in ID than it will be after it is reamed to size and it might damage the bushing if cut to the size of the king pin. Bushing driver sets are usually slightly on the small side of OD so they don't fit too tight in the ID. The ledge is what does the driving. The pilot just keeps it from being too far off center. You don't want to have to drive the driver out after the bushing is seated.

If I can press them into the spindles then that's how I do it. I only hammer them in when I have no other choice.

Yes ^^^, and if I was gonna cut a driver without a bushing to look at, I would start at about 5 thou under the .814 pin size. Since you will no doubt put a center in your new driver for the tail stock, it would be easy to make another accurate cut if 5 thou is not enough to fit the raw bushing

Thanks.

I took 1” bar stock and turned 1.5” down to .080

It’s been flame hardened.

I’ll let you know how it works.

You can get an adjustable reamer from Mcmaster with an extension pilot that will allow you to size both bushings in line. I just did a set of spindles for an F1 and the pin fit is perfect. You have to keep sneaking up on the right size with small adjustments/cuts, but you can can get a really quality job. I would try pressing in the bushings with a press to avoid deforming the bushing, they are soft/thin.

I’ve got a Sunnen hone machine that will hone them to size.

The Sunnen hone is the way to go. I have the correct reamer, but I take spindles to my local engine guy and have them honed.

X2, absolutely the best. I like to fit them tight, so the pin just goes in.
They'll loosen up soon enough.
