Interesting 8BA
I’ve had this engine for about 15 years, stored in the corner of the shop, and I kinda forgot what it was. Fast forward, someone is interested in acquiring a Flathead and I thought this would be a good candidate. So I pulled a head to check for cracks, not relieved, copper head gaskets, and an industrial engine tag I hardly noticed when I put it in the corner. Also does the casting number account for anything?

Re: Interesting 8BA
I've never known the casting numbers on 49-53 blocks to denote anything of value - as all the blocks were basically the same in those years (regardless of car model and destination). Looks like it could be a good rebuild candidate if the block is in good shape.

Re: Interesting 8BA
I have not checked the bore yet, but with factory Ford parts in it, I’m guessing it’s close to standard. I have been squiring MMO in the plug holes over the years I’ve had it. So hopefully it will come apart easily. I also need to look for a date code on the intake surface

I've never seen a factory relieved 8BA block.

Re: Interesting 8BA
I wonder if that "Industrial Engine" nomenclature might have something to do with that? And even though the tag says Made In U.S.A., I wonder if that "C" as in "C18S" could mean Canada, somehow? |

Re: Interesting 8BA
Here is a link to some Canadian serial number decoding. C18S is on the chart but doesn't correlate with the correct year if I'm reading it right. The write up below explains about lack of details/info for commercial/ industrial serial numbers.
