Default Compression check prep

Last spring I bought a 59 engine for my long term project. (40 sedan) I was told that this was an engine that was built sometime in the 50's and was running a year before I got it. I have no proof of that but I think the price was right. It has Edlebrock heads, an Edmonds manifold, Fenton headers, and an alternator. I may be kidding myself but I would really like to just clean it up and bolt it in. Right now I'm thinking about hooking up the starter and checking the compression. I'm looking for thoughts and wisdom. Thanks.

Before I'd worry about the compression, I'd concern myself with lubrication. You could run a pressure tank of oil through the bearings, and squirt some MMO into the valves and cylinders as you turn the motor over with a wrench on the crank pulley. after a few dozen turns with out anything hanging up, spin it with the starter and see if it has oil pressure. If it duz, go for it. You might just have a winner. good luck.
