Default 40 transmission capacity

This info is probably in here somewhere but I haven't found it. I've drained the old oil out of my transmission (it was nasty!!) and want to refill it. How much and what kind?

Thanks

Top loaders were 2-1/2 pints. The side loaders (1940-48) were 2-3/4 pints. In both cases, that should fill it to the filler plug hole in the side.
