Default electric fuel pump stops pumping

My wife grew impatient with my project 40 sedan so I bought another 40 as a driver. It's basically stock except for an electric fuel pump. The carb was rebuilt after I got it and I installed a Holley fuel regulator. Runs great! Until it gets hot. Not engine hot....just 20 minutes or so driving warm. Then the fuel pump stops pumping. I can wait ten minutes or so and it begins again. Any thoughts?? Thanks

it sounds like you have a bad pump and its failing, either because its wore out or the voltage going to it is making it shut down, just like a coil that gets over heated because to much voltage, cools down and then works again, try a resister on the pump to drop voltage and see if will work more reliably

Or the diaphram has turned to liquid rubber from alky gas.

I think if the diaphragm went bad it wouldn't work at all. Check the voltage at the pump and make sure the pump is 6 volts if you have a 6 volt system. Are you sure it's fuel and not the coil? G.M.

I'm wondering if this is not the problem I'm having. 12 volt pump works fine at first. 2-3 lbs. pressure at the regulator pressure gauge. Run the truck for fifteen or twenty minutes and the pressure just seems to goes away. Maybe I've been replacing pumps I thought were bad and it's not the fault of the pump at all. I'll check the voltage at the pump and see what I come up with.

I don't mean to steal this thread Bart 40 but sounds like we have a similar problem.

I don't think it's the coil. The last time this happened, I was staring at the engine (a large chunk of my mechanical knowledge) with the switch on and heard the pump come back on and watched fuel fill up the plastic fuel filter. I jumped back in,,,started it up and drove it home. Now my wife is afraid to ride in it again.

Keep us posted if you find anything and I'll do the same if I find something on this end. Thanks

Are these the Facet square pumps? I had one that behaved exactly like that. The pump just got hot internally and would swell or whatever, and the piston inside would lock up until it cooled.

If the pump is a high pressure pump it will need a return line to the tank. If so i would put it in the gas tank neck.

I crawled under and didn't see any obvious problems. I did see that the electric pump is mounted a good two feet in front of the tank. Is that a problem? I think I have made up my mind to get a new pump but haven't decided which one yet.
