Coolant question
Hello guy's
Got the model A back on the road after couple of years working on her. But I have seen that when I take the radiator cap of when engine is running that I do not see any movement in the coolant, even when keeping throttle. Thought that I would see movement? My water temp gauge isn't hooked up yet so I do not know if the coolant is flowing. The radiator has been reviced 2 years ago and kept it in Bubblewrap untill couple of months ago. Also I a running the vintage Precision thermostat. |

Re: Coolant question
I strongly suspect that you don't have a problem, You may not be running the engine long enough for it to get up to temp. and for the thermostat to open to allow the water to circulate. To make sure that the thermostat is not stuck closed (faulty) you may wish to remove it and run the engine without it which will allow the water to circulate.
You can do a quick check of the thermostat by boiling a pot of water and dropping the thermostat into the boiling water. You will see it open if it is in working condition.

Re: Coolant question
If you are not boiling, you are OK. Just get the temp gage hooked up and see where you are.

Re: Coolant question
Let the car warm up! On the front of the radiator, put your hand near the top and feel. it should be warm to warmer, move your hand down towards the bottom, it should be much cooler. Also my replacement radiator had a bit of a different baffle in the top, and I also could not see coolant flow. In fact, if I filled the radiator where I could see coolant, and the engine warmed up, it would pump excess out the overflow till it reached it natural level. But it was working just fine. Car has never overheated since the radiator replacement. Good you are checking proper operation.
