Default Door Question for the 40-41 Pickup Folks

I'm a bit stumped about the purpose of the hole on my '41 pickup doors that I've highlighted in the pic below. The holes appear to be original to the doors (they're on both drivers and passenger doors) and as shown, they're located on the inside trailing edge near the opening for the door latch bolt. The hole is also in line (on passenger side) with the hole in the exterior skin that receives the door lock cylinder and shaft. So I'm wondering if it has something to do with the shaft of the locking cylinder. I will have to buy a repop door lock cylinder so I don't yet have one to check on fitment. But even if it does, why is there an identical hole on the drivers side that doesn't have an external lock cylinder? Like I said, I'm a bit stumped.... what's it for? Thanks. -Ken

Typical stamping left and right but the hole migth only be used on one side or the other.

Basically a sheet is cut with all the holes then it might get stamp left or right

As for what its used for in this question. There is a allen or hex socket screw in there that holds the lock cylinder in. They can be a bitch to get out

Without seeing the picture, I am going to take a stab at it. The little hole is for access to the set screw that holes the lock cylinder in place. Typically, that little set screw is frozen in place. I have spent hours with a dremel getting the wallowed out set screw removed. As to the driver side, I would say it is for right hand drive trucks.
I recommend you do not get a repo lock. You can get a real one from the good lock guys or the 40 Ford guys here on the barm.
Just my opinion

Well the picture is there now, but I'm sorry I can't help with identifying what it does.

Edit: It's gone now.

Maybe the picture he's trying to post is on a website that has password protection. He can see it because the site recognizes his computer but it doesn't recognize ours.

I also do not see a picture but the hole you described is to guide the floppy end of the key lock cylinder into place. Use a stiff wire passed thru from the inside to hold up the square shaft as you slide it into the door.

I been able to see the pic from the first post. It is for the locking screw that holds the lock cylinder in place. The laft door never had a lock from the factory, but I saw a '40 in Hiawassee that the owner had put one on the left side.

I agree with Fordyford.
I used it to install the lock cylinder.
Hay wire in the hole in the end of the floppy rod to hold it up.
Don't know why there's one in each door.

Thanks for the comments everyone and sorry about the pictures ... I just don't get why some can see them but not everyone. (I've got the pics in my Fordbarn album and I'm inserting the BB code as instructed.)

As for the hole (for those who can't see the picture), it's on the inside door panel, parallel to and in line with the shaft of the locking cylinder for the passenger door. On my '50 Ford pickup, the set screw for the lock cylinder is inserted from the edge of the door, 90 degrees to the cylinder, and engages on a flat of the cylinder. This hole looks like it should receive the end of the shaft of the cylinder, if the shaft were round (not square) and /or if it were threaded to receive a screw at the end of the shaft.

I appreciate the help and I guess when I get a new lock it will become evident (I hope). -Ken

Instead of inserting the "BB" picture code try the one above it (I think it's the picture URL)
