Re: front gravel pan paint
Someone asked a very similar question over at the Vintage Thunderbird web site regarding the color to use behind the grill and in the gravel pan area. I would think the full size cars received the same treatment. The answer that came back was that it should be black.
David Tulowitzki said the following; The lower panel behind grill with the inspection plate as well as the grills for the fresh air intakes are to be painted black. Most restorers use a gloss black |

Re: front gravel pan paint
Maybe for Thunderbirds it was black, but the correct color on '55 Ford passenger cars is an argent silver. With a semi-gloss I think.

Re: front gravel pan paint
Argent is also used on the '56 sedans as well.

Re: front gravel pan paint
Fomoco used Argent Silver for the front splash pan for all full-size cars and wagons 1949 thru 1959. Maybe some later years too, but I don't know about newer cars. Some of the resto parts suppliers sell Argent silver enamel in spray cans. It has excellent durability.

Re: front gravel pan paint
Unless you're going concours, I've found 1979 Ford silver metallic looks good and original.

Re: front gravel pan paint
My 54 and 55 were silver. I painted them both body color, it makes the car look lower for some reason.

Re: front gravel pan paint
The filler panel under the grill was argent silver.
the two piece gravel shield under the engine how ever I believe was painted black. Mine has no original color left on it so I don't know what mine was. My '56 is kind of an odd ball as it has body color on the frame in areas that makes it seem my frame was painted body color by the factory. Think it also depends on the factory too as some factories did things a bit different than others.

Re: front gravel pan paint
The question on the VTCI Forum really was geared toward the area behind the grille versus the apron/splash pan on a 'Bird (which isn't the same as on a full-size Ford because of the 'Bird not having a bolted-on/bolted-together front clip), and I didn't get a chance to comment on "black-out" treatment (will be adding to it after I submit this). But, yes, for full-size Fords, Argent Silver splash pan, radiator support/inner fenders black; grille cavity/fender sides behind the stainless trim I'm not as well-versed with as my '55 Vicky was all-black body with white roof, but has been in brown primer for 38 years and counting.

Thanks for the info, I knew you experts would know. I sure wish I hadn't lost my phone/camera with over 1000 tear down pictures!

Re: front gravel pan paint
I used argent silver on mine, think it was either a VHT or Duplicolor wheel paint. Not at all glossy, looks about right.
