Default Exhaust system

Am toying with the idea of my '46 V8 not having mufflers, straight dual pipes right to tail pipe, anyone try this, any issue of no back pressure for engine to run properly, what's sound going to be like, YES, I know I could cut in a muffler later, anyone with a comment please

The only unmuffled sounds that sound sweeter than a flathead come from a bedroom!

many people run straight pipes, no mufflers. I've never heard of any adverse affects. The larger the exhaust, the louder the noise. Most consider 1 3/4" pipes to be the best on the flathead.

My 52 Merc sounds and runs great with a single straight pipe right to the back bumper. Loud? Might be an issue if you are needing to be street legal but at present it is not an issue for me. Recent video and audio here.

I ran straight pipes (see flanged sections) and found them so loud I could not take it - so put mufflers on and like it much better - nice healthy flathead rumble without the insane bark of straight through.

In my case the 59ab flathead is highly modified and supercharged so the power is greatly increased as is the explosive results ... I believe that each particular engine set-up will affect sound level i.e. compression ratio, exhaust manifold type, carburetion, cam, pipe diameter and length etc.

So each of you will need to evaluate exactly what sound will result on your particulare set-up.

I have an Arasco dual exhaust kit under my '37 coupe and I don't know what kind of mufflers they supplied but a little more harsh than a mellow I would like. I bought a very low mileage 1946 Ford coupe in 1971 and it was my favorite the engine was smooth a so quiet that with the hood closed no one could guess if it was running or not.Never wanted to change that one for duals. My '37 has a 59AB in it and with the side hood louvers you can hear everything fuel pump, adjustables clicking, everything.

That's a pretty chassis. how did you do the exhaust hangers? How are the exhaust pipes coated?

Just got dual straight pipes on the 49 (picked it up 5 minutes ago)and could not be happier, yes it's a little loud from the outside but in the cab it sounds amazing (and not loud at all).
