wood grained metal slats for a luggage rack 1930 deluxe roadster
Can anyone suggest a person who can wood grain the metal slats on a trunk rack for a 1930 model A deluxe roadster. This rack was an option in 1930 and is described on page 195 in the book "Those Wonderful Unauthorized Accessories for a Model A Ford". the supplier was the Bellevue Mfg. Co. in Bellevue, Ohio. The metal slats had a walnut finish. Thanks for help.

Re: wood grained metal slats for a luggage rack 1930 deluxe roadster
My understanding is the wood grain metal slat luggage rack was standard for the 1930 Deluxe Roadster and optional for 1931. I have an original on my 31' although the wood grain is barely visible anymore.
You might try this website:http://woodgraining.com , or look up "do it yourself" techniques.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Do you know if the rack was chrome or steel for 1930?

Anything wrong with making new slats from White Oak?

Re: wood grained metal slats for a luggage rack 1930 deluxe roadster
I know. My 1931 Deluxe Roadster had one. Just seems like good White Oak would look more authentic, even though it would not be as an original.

After seeing several A's at various meets over the years with actual wood replacement slats rather than original faux grained metal I came to the feeling that it actually looked worse and required more maintenance than the original. Every wood one I saw had degrees of blackening at the attachment points from water incursion into the wood, the bane of all cars with exterior wood trim if they are actually driven and see occasional rain. Not that mine are perfectly original either, my top coat is modern catalyzed urethane clear with a UV blocker. At least I don't worry every time it gets wet, including washings. I had a friend with an old wooden Owens boat with a Buick straight 8 and he spent countless hours working over the wood every year. Despite using modern overcoats and sealing every crevice the wood always showed black water streaks in a year. Much the same as I have seen on the A racks with actual wood slats. |

That's why I said "White Oak."

See past threads and then try doing it yourself. It is quite simple, three steps and looks will make you proud of yourself. I did my rack in mahogany and it looked fine so I did the interior also, Didn't spend $50 on the lot.

Re: wood grained metal slats for a luggage rack 1930 deluxe roadster
Sorry, but I have to ask. How could it look "more" authentic, if it's not original?

If you can see this photo, this is what we put on them. It is an Oak.

Red Oak grain is porous (you can actually blow smoke through a short length,) whereby White Oaks' grain is dense. Black stains are caused by moisture intrusion into porous grain woods. White Oak is the preferred wood for the beds of CCPUs. White Oak has a tannish grey cast, and Red Oak has varying shades if pink to red. Quarter sawn has the straightest grain pattern; Rift Sawn has a more pronounced grain pattern and flat sawn can be anything from mild to wild grain.

Re: wood grained metal slats for a luggage rack 1930 deluxe roadster
LUGGAGE CARRIER RACK
With the introduction of the De Luxe Phaeton in June 1930, a deluxe luggage carrier rack (A- 18575-B) was included as standard equipment. In February 1931 , this carrier rack was no longer a standard item, but could be added at extra cost. This carrier rack was only used on the De Luxe Phaeton. Luggage carrier racks on De Luxe Phaetons after January 1931 are judged in Area 16. The platform, connecting links and threaded rod were chrome plated. On the platfo1m, only the rear facing face and four sides were polished. The opposite face of the platform was a dull finish (the same process as used on bumpers). The plating did not completely fill in the comers, so aluminum paint was sprayed in these areas to provide a uniform finish. All of the hardware was cadmium plated, including the two clips that hold the carrier rack in the upright stored position. The gloss black enamel mounting brackets were unique to the De Luxe Phaeton and secured by four hex head bolts, nuts and lock washers. Four wood-grained steel slats were mounted to the rear surface (in the upright position) of the platform. The woodgrain pattern was specified as walnut and the colors were similar to walnut woodgrained interior mouldings. However, the slats used a straight grain and not a burl pattern. Platforms produced in the first couple of months were manufactured with square corners, created by bending the 1-1/4" sides to a right angle. The folded sides formed a sharp comer that was not welded. In September 1930, the platform was stamped to form the sides and this design had rounded corners. Downgrade for a 1931 vehicle with the early square corner platform. A similar luggage carrier rack (A-18575-C) was released as standard equipment on the De Luxe Roadster in August 1930. These carrier racks were sold as accessories for all other body styles beginning in August 1930. The finishes on these were identical to those on the De Luxe Phaeton carrier rack. Although, the two carrier racks are very similar in appearance, the major components are not interchangeable. The De Luxe Roadster platform pivoted lower on the side near the corner, thus requiring different connecting links and clips to hold the platform upright. The De Luxe Roadster luggage carrier rack utilized different mounting brackets that positioned the carrier rack directly above the mounting bolts. Luggage carrier racks on De Luxe Roadsters were an accessory after January 1931 and are judged in Area 16 - Accessories.
