First, there is no possibility of a transformer(coil) working on straight DC. In order to make the coil work the DC has to be fluctuated-interrupted. During times of point closed operation the coil can absorb but not release until the current is interrupted at which time the absorbed energy is released from the coil and the cycle starts again when the points close. The rotor and cap are coordinated with the points in such a way as to direct the released energy to the appropriate sparkplug.

The points are a switch, they start and stop the current flow through the coil.

use a dwell meter and see if the dwell changes when you give it the gas, if it does the bushing in the dist. is probably worn causing the shaft to wobble, also check the vacuum advance

Have you rechecked the timing? Incorrect timing will give these symptoms.
Also are you 6 or 12 v ? Spark plug leads and high tension leads breaking down under load may also give these symptoms.
