Default Steering box/shaft removal procedure.

I would like to know the detailed step-by-step 'how to' procedure for removing the steering box and shaft out of the column housing 'down' out of the car with the motor/ pedals still in place, please.
I want to remove the original '32 box and shaft, and slide up in a new Hudson unit.
Frame mounting bolts and the pitman arm I already have removed. It's the headlight switch on the box end itself, the brass rod, wireing harness, steering wheel, the horn button and the thumb switch there that turns on the lights. All that I don't know how, or in what order to remove.

unsnap the bail on the bottom end that holds the light switch body together, then give the body a slight twist and it will pull off the bottom. you can see the stamped track that the twist will follow on the sides of the can if you look close. look at a picture in your favorite parts catalogue. once the body and switch assembly is off, you will see a two pronged fork sticking out the end of the horn rod. that fork has a C clip under the fork. it is spring loaded, so you push the fork towards the steering wheel and you will see the clip, remove it and the fork comes off. now if you have a roadster, you can pull the horn/light rod out of the steering wheel. if a closed car, you must tilt the column down to get enough room to remove it. that rod is thin, weak, and valuable...dont bend it or force it, you need the full length to slide out. now, i dont think you are going to remove or install the box with the motor in place, but i will let the 32 guys take it from here

I have always taken them out the top. Pull the exhaust manifold and the toe board, Remove column drop screws and wiring .Pull the brake linkage. Wrap the column in cordboard. Let the brake pedal come fully up and back. It will take twitching and turning but will come out.
The wheel is not tapped for pulling. Take the horn rod out as mentioned and remove the wheel nut.
Get a large bearing seperator from Harbour Freight and a large two jaw puller if you don't have one. Put the seperator under the wheel with rags for cushioning and pull using the puller. Put the nut back on flush with the shaft and put a 3/8 bolt in the shaft for the puller to push on. Crank away.

PS, The wheel can not be pulled off by hand. Hitting the shaft only screws up the threads and damages the steering box.

The diagram is 33-34, but they are all somewhat similar.

Just to add ,I have done them with the manifold on by rolling it so the sector faces up ,make sure the tube is tight so you can get a firm grip to manoeuver it .once it faces the door you can remove the wheel and tube rod that will allow extra room for manoeuvring around the pedal

Just a reminder. When I get the headlight switch/brass rod removed. Then the steering wheel pulled.
I want to loosen whats need to slide the steering box (sector) and shaft DOWN out of the column housing and car. (leaving the column drop and column housing in place) Not, 'up' through the pedals like I'm reading what you guy's directions are saying.

Keep in mind that you need to get the car lifted fairly high for the clearance of the length of the steering shaft. Also, it is tight around the steering box and lots of stuff in the way.

you can not leave the drop and tube in place, it all needs to be loose to get the sector out of the frame. read andys post again

Good suggestions here! This thread for doing a 40 may help especially with height lift needed to pull box and shaft from bottom. Lengths are different but you can get the idea.
