I made one years ago,but I didn't find it really usable.I didn't like the idea of mixing up a little DP-40,spray the wheel, let it dry and remove it for the next one.Do that 5 times and then do it five times more for the finish paint.Handling wheels where the paint hasn't fetched up on is always a problem.Mixing up 5 little batches of DP and then 5 little batches of urethane doesn't thrill me much.If you're careful you can get away with changing the wheel with the primer not cured, but I won't try it with the finish coat. The wheel stand I made is handy though for checking wheel straightness.

For me they are overrated. A ten-foot length of pipe slipped thru the center of wheel hub is more than adequate. Support each end of the pipe on a tall sawhorse where the centerline of the wheels are at a level where you can clearly see where you are spraying. Use your finger in the tire band area to rotate the wheel as needed.

I feel the biggest issues that most people have is not allowing enough flash-time between coats and having improper heat range of solvents for the paint.

i used a long pole that i slide the wheels onto via the centre hole, then suspended both ends. i could turn the wheels as well as slide them back as i painted the next wheel.

if the pole is strong you could do all 5 at once.

I use a 24 foot piece of round bar stock.it is actually a cross bar-brace for a steel building.I set one end on the lift and the other on a stepladder.I like all the wheels at eye level.I do pre-prime and paint the insides of the wheels,in the covered part behind the hub cap.The bar poked through there will do no damage to the finish, and who would care anyway, you can't see it.I spin them around using a screwdriver in the valve stem holes, but you do have to be careful, the wheels do tend to migrate along the iron rod as you spin them.If you're not paying attention the wheels you had spread out ove 20 feet will wind up all bunched up in the middle.

I made a wheel painting fixture to paint my wheels. I haven't used yet, but I think it will work OK. I took some pictures of the fixture - it is pretty simple. I bought a cheap Lazy Susan on eBay for about $10. I made a particle board assembly to place on the Lazy Susan. The center thing to there to make sure when the wheel is place upside down (last picture attached) it wont tip over. The wheel spins easily on the Lazy Susan. You can turn the wheel by using your hand on the inside part where the tire would be, as you paint the rim. After painting one side, the rim can easily be lifted off and flipped over to paint the other side or put another rim on the fixture to paint it.

I made up a stand with a free running bearing to balance wheels. It is ideal to do this job too.

The ideal way is a long pole between two horses or stands so you can do it all at once.

My 2 cents:
I took heed to Brent’s suggestion and using two ladders and a pipe and was quite satisfied with how easy it was. Nice because all 4 wheels were in place for additional coats etc.
I used a top cup gun, if/when I do it again I will try a touch up gun thinking the smaller profile gun would be easier to maneuver around the rim and spokes. This may not be an issue with 19s & 21s......
Black enamel over epoxy primer laid in very well.

I just used Brent's suggestion with a 10 ft. PVC pipe and it worked great. I painted (2) wheels at a time. The 10 ft. pipe is cheap. Don't forget to put lug nuts in the mounting holes. The paint can chip when you install the wheels if you did not use the nuts. Ed

Alternative option is to take a modified razorblade and cut most of the paint material out of the holes.

We just use an Exacto knife.

Yeah that is a lot easier, how come I didn't think of that?
