Default Scary picture

The attached picture was posted by a car dealer on their website showing off a beautiful 1929 Model A.

This is not a good way to put a Model A on lift. Notice that none of the lift points is positioned on the frame! These are supposedly professional......

I saw that same pic on that website and wondered who was the genius who lifted it up that way, especially with the professional write up that went with it. As a buyer I would not like to see that.

I recently bought a car out of Arizona that has been serviced by the local Ford dealer. WHAT A BALLS UP! I won't go through what they did and didn't do but I certainly let them know what idiots they were. Maybe someone should let that workshop know the same thing!

I posted this ~ 1 year ago. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216289

I saw it on You Tube.

The pictures FordTudor31 posted appear to be of another car so they are still at it and haven't killed themselves... yet!.

Anyone have a picture of the proper lift points? I know that this a horrible question but I'm brand new to the Model A world (and have never been underneath one yet. Might as well start learning what I can so that I'm not the guy lifting a car like this.

If nothing else, this shows what good metals were used in the construction of the Model A! Had this been a Chevy of that era, do you think those hollow and splindly radius rods would have held up like this? Me thinks not! They would have bent and broken in short order. One can only imagine the car then falling off the lift. The garage men's response? "Oops! Lunch break!"

I saw a sedan with rear shocks mounted on the radius rods. When he came into the repair tent, one radius rod was sheared in two. They were designed for fore and aft movement control, not vertical. It was rusty inside, but I’m guesses most are.

Marsall, post #10: "Had this been a Chevy of that era, do you think those hollow and splindly radius rods would have held up like this? Me thinks not! They would have bent and broken in short order."

Oh, ye of little faith.
Having spent many years driving and servicing my 1928 Chevrolet, I can assure you from much personal experience, that the Chevrolets (at least my 1928 Chevrolet) were very much the equal of the cheaper-built Fords. In fact the Chevrolets were so much better that the sales records of 1928 shows that the Chevy wollopped the Ford in number of cars sold!

O.K. guys, now you can 'vent'.
But I should tell you, there is nothing you can say that I have not heard before, or said myself. I am thoroughly familiar with all of the counter-arguments and have often used them myself. But I know this is a forum not only of information, but also a place to 'vent'. So howl away.

I don't have any pictures to show you but when using a lift like this you need to place the lift pads on the frame not the radius rods or wish bone.

Remember lifts used to have channels you drove onto. Car remained supported on the under carriage.

I think the uninformed garage hand thought the radius rods were solid steel and not hollow . Maybe he thought the construction was the same as the front axle . .I have seen cut ones with a lot of rust inside so lucky this one did not end in tears !!!

John in windy more rain on the way Suffolk County England .

Tom had a fantastic thread a while back that Mitch had showed how to put an A on a hoist. Pics are gone now , but here’s something that may help show lift point

That's what I'd buy if I had to buy a hoist. I need a taller garage.
