Which lining - woven or molded ?

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I couldn't find the answer in a search.

I still have pressed-steel drums on my A; which lining material works best, woven or molded ?

I see lots of NORS molded linings on e-bay, but would rather not spend money on them if woven works better with the steel drums.

I'd use the woven lining riveted to the shoes.

I also use woven riveted lining. It causes more friction and better brakeing.

Tom, is there a difference between the woven material thats bonded onto the shoes like Mac's sells than the material that you rivet on?

There is no difference as long as the glue doesn't let go. I prefer riveted

Right, for some reason the glue seems to let go when the car sets for long periods of time. I parked a Corvair for a couple years and when I went to use the brake shoes, the linings were all off the shoes. The same thing happened to my Omni brakes.

1. Called the U.S. Model A cast iron brake drum manufacturer about 16 years ago with the same question whereby they responded that woven linings provide slightly better breaking than molded linings.

2. Next, about 6 years ago, called the very knowledeable Model A gentleman from California who provides an abundance of foreign made brake drums on used hubs, whereby he said he could provide either woven or molded linings; however, he promised that woven linings would make noise & squeal after in use for a short time.

3. Every Model A person appears to have different opinions & experiences which makes it interesting because it gives us all something to talk about!

The woven linings give a softer pedal. I just replaced my bonded linings because with mechanical brakes the bonded requires much more pedal pressure. The pedal is more responsive now with woven and the car is much easier to bring to a stop.

along with the glue issues bonded linings are prone to heat cracks
riveted disapates the heat better you see it all the time on modern cars

I have had soft woven linings on my pickup for 12 years and no squeals yet !!!
It also has pressed steel drums ,

The Squeals happen when the brakes are out of balance
IE one brake takes hold before the other one does!!!
probably with either type of shoes or drums it would happen

The Model A brake system works very well if you are prepared to spend the time to set it up properly

Thanks all for yoru replies.

Sounds like with mechanical brakes and pressed-steel drums, I will be better-off staying with woven lining.
