Default first shake down ride

Hi folks, im looking for thoughts, I took my 34 for its first ride after extensive body off resto. It has a 59ab but is mostly all original. It went well but then developed some surging, not a skip but just a big loss of power. I headed for home and at one point the power came back but then back to bad. Once home it would no longer idle but would re start. The next day It started and I went for a shorter ride and it was fine. The first ride when the issue happened I was pushin it along at a good pace (up to 60 at one point). It has a new drake gas tank, new gas line, rebuilt fuel pump with filter in the glass bowl, rebuilt 94 carb. Also has rebuilt bubba crab dist. Car has been converted to 12v neg ground and Im using 12v coil with built in resistor. Plugs and wires new. I havnt found anything obvious yet. Ken

Was driving Mikes 34 tub the other day and it did this after running it up to 75 mph .
3.54 gear so no problem rpm wise .

Anywayz it was the gas cap .
Seems the venting was plugged and also when it was acting up the clear fuel filter had lots of air bubbling in it .
Not vapor lock as the pump and fuel line were not hot .

Car was real full and it has a drake tank also .
Dunno if the tank had anything to do with it will be replaced with a minty stock one .

Check the gasket on the fuel pump glass bowl....Could be a intermittent vacuum leak as well....

I chased my tail for weeks trying to figure out why my truck kept running out of gas with 5-10 gallons in the tank. vapor lock, added thermo wrap around the gas line close to the carb, gas lines were new, blew them out again, removed the carter glass bowl filter, removed gas cap, the tank had been cleaned a coated. Luckily the sending unit has an inspection plate in the bed. drained the gas and looked into the tank and found the problem. Some silicon from sealing the rubber sending unit gasket had fallen into the tank and intermittently plugged the fuel pickup line. I switched to cork with Permatex aviation and the problem was fixed and I trusted my gas gauge again. There is nothing better than to fix a problem and know you found the cause versus taking apart and putting together and the problem went away without you knowing exactly why.

Years ago, probably 35 years I bought a WCFB carburetor at a local swap meet. It looked brand new in the box but was marked as defective.Guy tells me it came from a local auction of a shutdown car dealership and thought it was pulled from a brand new car that sold, it was a Desoto dealer. I went over it didn't do too much too it and put it on an Edelbrock 4 barrel intake on a '53 F-100.Ran good in the garage at idle but a 1/2 mile down the road it would cough and shutdown.Would restart and got me home but sputter again like it was outta gas. Finally went over carb better and found a simple solution a piece of rubber like a fuel hose sliver clogging fuel to bowl.Guess new car dealership found it was easier just to replace which would have been like 1954-1955 mayby. Only problem I had from then on was I could never jet it good enough to run leaner.

I had the exact same issue with a Jeep when I was in the Army, would run great, then not, then great. After going through the fuel tank, I finally found a cut piece of fuel hose floating around in the filter attached to the carb.

I have had a problem with the fuel pump push rod not being quite long enough. Don't know why, or if it might be relevant in your case, but I had it.

Never use silicone around gas. It' turns to "snot' and will plug up fuel tanks etc.
I bought a '36 coupe once and had the same problem. Pulled the sending unit and found silicone around the gasket. Pieces of it went into the tank and started plugging up the pickup tube. It turned to some slimey globs and I had to pull the tank to totally clean it out.

Thanks so far for all the replies, so far all I have done is remove the filter in the glass fuel pump bowl, replaced the coil and took of my new custom air filter and put the stock one back on. I have to take it out on the road to test but I live on a dirt road so I gotta wait for a dry window! Still not summer in Vermont. It feels more like fuel and it seems to take less miles now to act up or its just very intermittent. by the way, two folks mentioned a plugged fuel vent gas cap, I don't think the car ever had a vented cap but next trip out if it acts up I will loosen cap as a test. Ken

Ken ,
I'm interested in knowing if your gas cap helps this issue .
Mikes car has a Drake tank also and loosening the cap cured it .
Tank was very full when it did it .

I don't recall ever having this issue with a stock tank ???
I have a nice stock tank to put in the car and it sure looks vented to me .

I have not checked the Drake tank to see what it has for a pickup .

Anywayz I took the car on a 100 mile round trip yesterday and no issues with the cap slightly loose .

Will post what I find after removing the Drake tank .
Plugged vent ??
Wrong pickup ??
