What are the differences between 1928 and 29 30 31 gearboxes?
With pictures would be great Maybe I want to install a Mitchell transmission thank you |

Until near the end of 1928, the tranny and clutch were the multiplate style. This mean the starter drive, bellhousing, flywheel, pedals, pedal shaft, and tranny case and input shaft were all different from the later single plate clutch. Many with the multiplate like it and say it's a bit smoother engagement.

internal on the early ones need spacers/ thrust bearings put on the main shaft to keep the main cluuster in the center, later on they became part of the case casting itself. Early ones use a fat lock plate to hold the main shafts in place while the later went thinner. I think the case itself is the same externally...

There were two transmission cases. The first case was used to mid 1928 and was distinguished by a reverse idler gear shaft with a 1-318"diameter wide collar visible at the left rear of the transmission case. The second case was used for the remainder of production. Although there were several internal changes in this transmission case, the outward appearance was the same. Initially the case used a 1 I 4" x 1-7 I 8" countershaft and reverse idler shaft retainer at the rear of the case. This retainer was changed to 118" x 1-314" in November 1929 and the exposed ends of the shafts were also redesigned. Three gear shift housings were used: • Beginning until June 1928 - No provision for mounting an emergency brake lever. • June 1928 through July 1929-With the addition of the separate emergency brake system, provision was made for mounting the emergency brake lever forward of the gear shift. • August 1929 through end of production- The emergency brake lever was mounted on the passenger side of the gear shift housing. There are early and late bearing retailers and oil baffles as well.
