New Carb Question

The previous owner handed me a remanufactured carburetor when I picked up the truck and I just now compared it to the original one.
There is one item on the base of the new one that I don't know want it is or want it does.
It is the silver item to the right of the idle adjustment screws.

that is the later model "power valve location" I think, got a couple of those myself, look on the bowl of the carb and tell us what is there and the one on your carb

It's not the power valve. Those are still inside the carburetor like the earlier ones. That is what is called a "Spark Valve". I'm not into the later carbs, so I really am not up on what they do or how they do it, but I can assuredly say that it is not interchangeable with a power valve. I think they may have something to do with making the "Load-a-Matic" work better. Just about every 94 rebuild kit you can buy these days contains both one of these and a regular power valve to cover the maximum amount of applications.

The spark valve was added to the Holley for the Y-Block V8 in '54 (EBU carb). It was also used in '55 and '56 on the Holley two barrel (ECG-5 and ECG-6).


The carb you posted with the spark valve appears to be a '55 or '56 truck carb (1 1/16" venturi) that someone installed an earlier throttle shaft and levers on.

You are right, cast into the side of the carb is 1 1/16.

I don't know if Charlie ny is helping out Bubba or not, but I know he also does the Chevy distributor to flathead V8 conversions.

Actually, all other things being equal, I prefer "Charlie ny"'s conversions because of the "Hold Down" method. It uses a regular stock Ford distributor clamp setup rather than a set screw.

At least that's the way it was a few years ago when I evaluated them.

I use Charlie's distributors exclusively. As i understand, he is buying Jim's stock of parts for his use. His are the best.
