Default overdrive

I have a Laycock overdrive "j" type on my 1931 Model A. Does anyone know where to drain the oil and where the fill plug is?

The only way to drain the oil is to remove the small aluminium sump, this also allows you to clean the filters. The OD shared oil with the gearbox. Without the gearbox fill plug one must fit a plug to the OD front housing about half way up. Cheers

On mine I have 7/16" plug horizontally that threads in to the sump to drain the oil.
Mine has a pipe thread fill plug as Tanglfoot mentioned above.

Thanks for the input on the overdrive. Took the plate off the bottom and about a cup of oil came out, Not good.
The filter looked clean. I found a plug at the very top in the front section, have to be a contortionist to get oil into the OD. Have to find a way to fill it, no lifting the floorboard there.

If you found a plug at the front of the unit, why not pump oil into the OD with a pump. Also if it shares the tranny oil as mentioned above, why is there so little oil in it to begin with? Jack

Paul; Glad to see you are on the barn. There are a lot of guys and some gal's to help here and they know a lot about the Model A. You should tell everyone that you are taking a 1200 mile trip in a few weeks with the A and I'll be along as the onboard mechanic. Jack

Most common cause of NOT shifting, is LOW on oil. Use ATF!

I use 10-30W oil in my Laycock Overdrive. I fill it using a pump oil can. Takes a while but it works for me. Fill it until oil comes out of the fill hole.

FWIW, to ensure a good ground, I run a ground wire from the unit to the frame. I do this because the unit started to shift in and out of overdrive on its own. I spoke to Rich Little, the guy who built my overdrive, and he told me to add a ground wire. It has worked perfectly since installing the ground wire.
