Winfield did not put a number on many of his cams, and 4X means nothing to me. I also doubt that this one was ground by winfield himself as his stamp was a 1-piece stamp in very small letters and stamped on the front face of the cam, under the timing gear on A & B cams. F.A.S.T. is doing a series on the Winfield brothers, and explains all that. It is a great series, the most complete on them that, to my knowledge, is the most complete and accurate article ever done on them. Ed is the dominate one in the series but Bud is covered too. Bud was also very intelligent and knowledgeable in the automotive world, the Novi was mostly his doings. Bud was killed in an auto accident at a young age. Number 18 in the series is at the printer now, with maybe 2 more to go. When all done, a book is planned. www.hotforhotfours.com

If you look at the pictures of that cam there is an SU in front of the 4 which would make sense. SU 4. It might be someone’s copy of a Winfield, that was done a lot. Maybe that’s why the X

Or maybe it was an SU cam 4 degrees advanced or retarded and that’s why the X

What do you think Jim?

Dodge, could be either one, or neither, but probably done by some other grinder. Copying was/is common on cams and Ed didn't seem to mind. The SU indicates his "Super" series. SU1A and SU1R are examples. I've seen 3 different lifts on his 1R grind. The Bell Auto catalog listed his 1R as having .315" lobe lift, the one I do has .350" and I've seen one at .375". Winfield would judge your capabilities and grind a cam to suit what he thought you could handle.
