Where were Marvel-Schebler carbs made?
I grew up in Springfield Illinois, and during the 50s and early 60s and I remember that there was a Marvel-Schebler factory/foundry near my Jr High school.
I would walk past this factory on my way to school and now I am wondering if this was where these carburetors were made? Anyone have an idea if this was the place? or just where the heck they were manufactured. |

Google is your friend. There is a very extensive history of the company on the net.

Computers are not my friend….but stuck with them. Everything I do has to go thru a portal or some crap like that!
I hope I don’t get stuck with electric cars! I’m probably old enough I can keep burning gas….but at what cost per gallon? Hate to think it |

Re: Where were Marvel-Schebler carbs made?
How did this thread go so quickly from Where were Marvel-Schebler carbs made to a discussion about search engines?

Re: Where were Marvel-Schebler carbs made?
So I did take a look and found out:
The company was involved with Flint Mi. and later Decatur Ill. I hope this helps in some small way.... All the best ... ✔️🇺🇸 |

Re: Where were Marvel-Schebler carbs made?
You got it! I did a quick look up on Duck Duck Go before asking the question, however I wanted to know if the factory in Springfield, IL was where the carbs were made. The foundry in Springfield perhaps provided castings which used in the assembly plant in Decatur, Who Knows? Who Cares? |

Are you suggesting I'm not old and have a short attention span? Phew, that was close!

O' YBlock Head No No, it is the young who have too short an attention span to even learn how to drive safely.

I worked at Marvel Schebler in Decatur, Illinois from 1976 to 1980. I walked into the plant and there was a cart with several hundred Tillotson Model A carbs on it.

Re: Where were Marvel-Schebler carbs made?
I was young. Burning the candle at both ends most of the time. A self taught IBM Mainframe computer geek. The factory building is still there last time I went by. It was an old building even back then. Decatur, Ill was an industrial town from the earliest days. (founded 1829)
I was in a computer building next to the factory under the water tank. Seldom went through the factory, but it was full of old milling and industrial machines etc. Wood rafters plus those old fashioned high up windows for ventilation and light. The plant ran 3 shifts and had maybe 2-300 workers, men and women. They made Marvel Schebler aircraft engine carburetors too. I have one on my sport biplane. They had bought out Tilotson and the carbs I was looking at that morning were a special order of 1500 carbs. The carbs were basically sold at a minimal price to get the long term repair kit business. (So I was told) I don't remember any furnaces for making castings, so maybe the Springfield plant was a foundry. That's about all I can say. They moved the plant to Dixon Ill shortly after I left. It was a great place to work. Good memories.
