Default Re-building my transmission

I'm rebuilding a trans I got for my 28 RPU project. I know the bearing on the main shaft needs pressed on but does the bearing on the main drive gear press on? I removed the snap ring and collar on the one that came out of the tranny and I was able to pull the bearing off by hand.

Referring to above, Bearing 40 (rear) is pressed on - and that's all that is holding it. Well, that and the shoulder where the ring 42 is and the small ring 44 to the front ahead of the shaft which both serve to locate the shaft. It's not a hard press, as I was able to force it out as a 22 year old without special tools. I think I used a block of wood and a hammer.

Bearing 8 (front) is not pressed, but is instead held by the snap collar. One of the transmissions I have done since the first I remember being concerned that this seemed quite loose and why would this be? But the split collar 9 I made sure was compressed (tight) beforehand to make it positive secure on re-assembly.

Hope this helps.

It should be a press fit. Is it an original bearing? If it's loose now it was loose when it went on.

Heat bearing to @ 220F and it should drop onto the shaft.

Here is a simple tool I made to heat press on bearings and gears, such as the crankshaft timing gear. It only cost about $2 to make, and it gets the parts very hot with just a 60 watt light bulb. The 4 long carriage bolts are used to support a pan if I was to keep some other liquid warm. They also help protect the bulb from being bumped.

A ten minute heat up on the light bulb, the bearings will drop right on.
