'38 pu hubcap stainless repair
What is the feasibility of removing small dings in the stainless? It seems it would be difficult having the steel behind it. Does anyone offer a service to do this and what is approximate cost? Thanks. Jim

Stainless must be removed from the steel hubcap base before repairs can be made. To remove the stainless, drill a hole in the base under the stainless about 1/8" in dia. but do not drill into the stainless. Use air pressure to blow the stainless off. Do your repairs and grease the edges of the stainless. place the entire assemble on a open gallon paint can with several layers of rags between the can and the cap and sit on the hubcap. The stainless should pop on. If the stainless does not pop on, and you have painted the base, sand the painted edge of the hubcap to reduce the paint thickness and try again.

Re: '38 pu hubcap stainless repair
As for the actual dent removal on stainless, I use a blunt pick, shot bag and a very gentle persuasion of a hammer. I'll use a med grit sand paper to rub across on the back side to give me a reference point on where to pick and hammer, use lite taps, then flip it over and use a very fine file (like a mill file) and file the top side, this will start to show you the high and low spots, then flip back over and pick the low spots, flip back over and gently file till the dent is gone, then sand the file scratches with successive fine grits of sand paper and polish on a wheel with rouge.

Re: '38 pu hubcap stainless repair
so easy a caveman can do it!
seriously, the lincoln cap i worked about 4 hrs. on the one quadrant and that is just to the 400 grit stage. i don`t use a file on these, the coarse-est thing i use is a soft arkansas stone. these skins are only about .012" thick. tom |
