The words; rare, barn find, all original, restored, are a few that jump out for me.

People that spend oodles making a vintage car look pretty, but don't sort-out the mechanicals, so they have a gorgeous trailer queen that can't make it from the trailer to the field and back or around the block reliably.

#1 peeve. Easy. Stupid people ! Its amazing the number that want to tell you all about your vehicle and then stick their little brats in them so they can drop the ice cream cone or spill the pop on the seats only to quickly grab the kid and run away before you see what just happened.
Or, the snobs that only want to see a hot-rod or a perfectly restored show winner.
A little off subject. At our annual 4th of July fly-in breakfast there are always planes on display. One year this clown was setting his kid on the wing of a Cherokee and having him run down the length of the wing and jump off the end. This was great fun until I stopped this idiot and showed him the damage to the wing and tip he had caused. He couldn't see any harm in what he was doing at all and was argumentative.
Its hard to be polite to some of these people.

I've got to agree with Jeff and Patrick L. in post six and eight. Along the lines that Pat speaks of, I once had a little bastard steal the keys out of my speedster and I never got them back. Next to that, I hate internet bullies that are too much of a coward to talk their trash to me in person.

Bob-A

Or "Ole Skewl"

I also wonder if some folks might be chapped by non-standard wheels on A's, particularly 16's from the V8 era?

The rod that's maybe 10% 1929 Model A Coupe that's registered and displayed as a 1929 Model A Coupe. Some of the workmanship on a nice rod can be pretty impressive, but don't call it something it isn't.

Those who try to make a Model A built with the technology of the late 1800 to ride like a car built in the 21st century.
That and rude people who think they know it.

Folks who create a rod - modern motor, brakes, suspension, tranny, steering, suspension and frame WHO then try to tell folks their car is older than mine 'cause there's was based on a 28 and mine's a 31.

At that point I usually open the engine cowl and the argument ends.

1) "It's a MODEL T!"

2) "How fast does it go?" (favorite reply- I once had it up to 80 but I was pulling it on a trailer at the time).

My favorite answer to this is to look very pensive, stroke my chin and say "I would except then I wouldn't have a ride home."

I had a J 3 Cub at a show in Maine, for the non aviators a Piper Cub is covered in fabric (ceconite). Same problem as above, only they (kids)were climbing in and out kicking the side of the plane. Now, being the polite and agreeable man that I am, I very nicely, as in I had him by the throat, explained this was an antique aircraft and NOBODY is going to use it like a kids slide. He was not appreciative of the fact I was in his face, but I had no intention of moving an inch. When he saw the fire in my eyes he called his brats and promptly left.

You are always going to run into the know it all person. Laugh at them and ignore.

I had an Ultrlight Aircraft that I built and took it to a fly in. On the Static Display line I had sign on it that read:
Please do not play with this Aircraft, idle curiosity on your part could be catastrophic on my part.

Using the door of a J3 as a kids slide wouldn't go over very well with me either. I'm a big fan of the J3, learned in one and still put at least 100 hrs/yr on one. I'll give anyone a ride, but, won't tolerate any abuse.

People who believe they know it all and profess they are real experts on Model 'A's.
Some of their remarks:
# All Model 'A's had 4 blade fans.
# All Model 'A's had 'drum' taillights.
# The 30/31 radiator shells and headlights were always chromed.
Other things.
# Must be worth over $500.00.
# When was it made 1910, 1939, or similar.
# Does it have any brakes?
# Have I had it from new?
# Ford made one of these every 10 seconds you know.
# They all had cast iron pistons.
# No one makes parts for these an more.
# I had a Model 'A' once and was told never to touch those funny levers behind the steering wheel.
Is it air conditioned? I tell them my 30 Phaeton with side curtains off is fully air conditioned.
And so on. Gets a bit tiresome after a while.

Not me, but my WOFF from my RAAF days. He returned to his car at a shopping centre, and the lady parked next to him was using his boot lid as a parcel shelf for her groceries. He didn't say anything, just got in, started up, and then quickly drove off, spreading her groceries all over the road.

That's a good one!I'll have to remember it.

Another of my pet peeves is:

"How much did you pay for it?"

While I have several creative responses to this question my most inspired reply happened when a friend of mine and I were fueling up his 30 Tudor:

"Well, an elderly lady hired us to clean out her garage and under a pile of boxes and an old mattress we found this. When I asked her about it she said That goes too!"..............................We still charged her $200.

I'll start with the fact that the Hemmings Blog the OP started with WILL NOT OPEN. If you are looking for a pet peeve of mine I'll start with the opinion of some that I'm supost to be interested in EVERYTHING deamed "Collectable" by some unknown to me super now it all. There are PRE WWII Vehicles and POST WWII Vehicles, the early cars are seen on show fields the late model crap is in a WalMart lot, no offence to Walmart customers. Bob

you know with my old truck people think its all original , to me i know it was missing parts and some were replaced with original parts but not the ones that the truck originally had , which to me is what Original means, i dont really get into it much with em i just let em believe what they want and share any interesting facts i can with them that they may or may not remember, they also always think its worth more than it is which i find funny because even though it is only worth less than 8 k its still more than they would afford to pay for it.

I can understand know-it-all commentators and unsupervised children being a pet peeve, but to get pissed at people's ignorance is crazy IMO. Those are 'teachable moments'...opportunities to foster the love of vintage automobiles/motoring in the hearts & minds of someone else. How many times do we read posts on this and other like-minded message boards lamenting the fact that the hobby is dying, club memberships are declining, and the privilege of operating these mechanical wonders on public roadways is slowly being legislated away? Perhaps if we took seriously the well-meaning yet ignorant questions of the unwashed the state of our hobby would be different. My 2 cents.

Yup, I agree. Reply back with basic facts, give them good information. At best you might foster some interest in someone, especially a youngun. At worst, you wont be the remembered as the person who gave bad information when they find out the truth down the road. They talk because they are interested/fascinated in what you have, I have learned that people, when interested in a subject will talk about it, whether they know what they are talking about or not.

Furthermore they are actually relaying the bad information that was told to them by the last guy, hence perpetuating the very problem that is your pet peeve, lack of knowledge by the general public.

People that equate TV shows to what I do with my cars.I've never seen any of these shows,so I don't really know what they're about.I have heard of a pickers show, and I heard of the pawn star show. Here, porn is pronounced pawn by the natives,so for a long time I thought there was a show about porn stars.I see lots of cars bought by people that watched TV,then went out, bought a car,and attempted to take it apart to build something. No tools,no torch,no welder,no garage, and not a clue as to what they were trying to do.They buy hubcaps, chrome goodies, seat covers, and let the car sit out in the weather until somebody like me come along and buy it for 1/10 of the value it had before they monkeyed with it,and ruined it.I know of a Camaro that was bought on a whim to fix up.The T-top rubber was getting bad,so he removed it.Then, the plan was to order new rubber,it's been three years, the T-tops are sitting on the car,no rubber,I looked in the car this winter while plowing along next to it.The ice was at the level of the tops of the seat cushions.Flush with the shifter boot. The owner said, well,we're gonna buy a new interior anyway. It didn't NEED one in the first place. It does now. This car has gone from a nice driver to a parts car.

Dick Goder from Cleveland Channel 8 held a Woolybear Festible in Vermilion, Ohio. It parade was about 4 hours long. As those with different original colored Model A's would pass the grandstand. Goder would make the remark about "You can buy a Ford in any color as long as it was black" Each year the line of A's got smaller and ended up behind the horses at the end.

I wasn't the only one T'd off about this.

I think everyone tries to be polite and have an intelligent conversation with those that come and comment about whatever it is that you're showing. But, there are just some down-right stupid people out there. I don't blame folks for not taking the time to show their vehicles anymore.

I love the smiles and questions about the cars. I guess my pet peeve is trying to make an 80 + year old car run, ride, steer and have the amenities of a new Lexis. Just my opinion, I might be wrong.

People who honk their horns while I'm driving. I know it's a compliment but it spooks me. I always think I'm in somebody's way or perhaps a part fell off.

One phenomenon I have noticed that truly irks me is when a young driver is behind me and although I am keeping up with the traffic flow I look like I am slow. They dart past only to duck back into my lane in front of me and hit the brakes totally ignorant of the fact that it takes me a much longer distance to stop than it does them.
This happens a lot to me.

I guess the worst thing about A's are some of the people that try to buy them. Not quite as bad a British bike buyers, but pretty close.I've sold a lot of stuff over the years, but only a couple of A's.I do not want to get involved in selling A's.I've heard things like,I deduct $4000.on the price of every A for a paint job. Also,I deduct $3500.for the price of an engine,we don't know what this one will need. These people walk in thinking they are going to set MY price for me.I set my price knowing what the rodders will pay.If I hear the words,I never pay asking price, any price drop I had in mind just went out the window. They're not buying from me.I had a fellow drive hundreds of miles to look at a roadster pickup I had.I overdescribed the truck, and made it VERY clear the price was firm.I told him, don't drive all the way here thinking you will make me an offer,so come prepared to pay the price or walk away.He just kept saying,ya,ya,ya,we'll see when I get there. He offered me less than half of what I wanted. He got pretty mad when I said no.I told you,$15,000, and not $14,995.I sold it for $14,500 a day later.

Along those lines, not long ago I pulled up to a traffic light and stopped. I left a car length between the me and the car in front of me. Then this young gal pulls up behind me with a phone stuck her ear and the radio blasting. She must have thought there was too much room in front of me and pulled out, passed me on the right and pulled in front of me. There was not enough room for her to straighten up so she sat there at about a 45º angle. I just then eased up on her to within a foot and blipped the horn just to get her attention, she was oblivious and just took off like her ass was on fire when the light turned and seemed to be upset that the car in front of her wasn't going fast enough. Have I mentioned before that there are a lot of stupid people in this world.

Pet Peeves:

"Is it for sale?" or "Do you want to sell it?" I really hate these unsolicited offers (or fake offers). Sometimes I like to say, "I was asking $20,000, but for you I'll take $30,000." My brother is a little more direct -- on occasion he'll ask, "Do you see an &$%#@* for sale sign on this car?"

"What is it worth?" or "What did you pay for it?" Boy, I can do without these two questions too.

"Are you going to put a 350 in it?" That will never happen.

I have a 1937 Ford and can do without the PT Cruiser comparisons.

"Why don't you restore it?" I usually say, "It was, during World War II". Some get it, some don't. I had one young person ask "When was that?" .... I had to walk away, fast. I just didn't have the time to start a history class in a parking lot.

"Guaranteed to fit your 1928-1931 Ford Model A." Also fits: COPO Camaro, 2007 Lexus, 1951 Hornet.

I have a bunch, "Ole School" at the top, mint, rare, excellent condition. Oh another one in the top 2 or 3, "I'm gonna restore it someday". You would not believe how many "32 Ford coupes" my buddy has seen out west hunting or passed on the road. "There is no rust in it". He wants this much $$$ for it until you get there and he actually wants this much $$$$$$.

Finding a car that has been sitting in the same place on four flats under an inch of dust for 30 years and hearing from the owner "Oh no, I can't sell that. It was so special to Grandpa that he wanted me to have it!"

I guess mine is those who touch everything. My worst was the lady who took down the "do not touch" sings so she could get better photos of her kids in the car. At a museum event I asked a guy who approved him putting his kids in the car. He said "it is just an old car and its free." I pointed out his errors and he grabbed his kids and wife and stomped off making loud noises. To everyone's delight he found that he had locked his keys in his car and this was Sunday afternoon. It was a long wait in the weeds for the lock smith to show up. Once a lady put her purse with the 4 steel nubs on the bottom on my freshly painted fender. I asked for the amount of $$ it had cost me and she huffed off saying she would never return. Two minutes later a "Gramma" was sitting on my running board to catch her breath. She apologized for sitting on my car. I said" any time" and sat beside her and talk about the good old days. What a difference. 99% percent of our guests are super

A few years back I dove my A to the local store to pick up bread or milk. When I came out there was a gentleman in his 80's sitting behind the wheel of my A. At first I was a little upset till we started to talk. He told me how he had dated his wife in a tudor like mine. Even the same color. So he couldn't help himself to get behind the wheel. It brought back memoirs. At the end I found out his wife had passed away a few days ago.

Since then I'm always open to people talking to me about the car and the touching. (except brats and people with rings) after all we all are getting older and maybe be in that person's shoes.

I was doing a ground up restoration, and everyone saying "What's taking you so long? you have been working that a long time"
My answer "How long did it take you to build your car?"

Next would be the guy who comes over to tell me all the 'fine point' errors in my car.

And finally, I have a Town Car that has loop pull straps (The things people pull on to get out of the car). A lady asked "What are those cloth loops for?"
My answer was "If your lucky, they are for ankles"

I installed the loop pull straps in my 31 standard tudor because I like em and most of the cars had them when I was a kid. My great aunt, in her ninties, wanted to ride in my tudor . The old lady was still very spry. Instead of useing the pull loop she grabbed the repro knob on the window riser and pulled it off in the process. She handed me the knob and said here, you need to fix this.

Thing that always looks stupid to me are the post 1950's cars at any car show with their hoods open. Looks like a flock of aligators at feeding time in the zoo. Not that there many I'd really want to stop and photograph. Bob

And it was here at the shop to have the charging system checked. Hot diggity dog.
out the door I go!!! To be greeted by a bright orange coupe with a 350 in it..!

Need I say more?
I also love this one........Can I look at it? OK, yes you can.

Tired of hearing also, LS 1, 2,,3,4,5,6 etc. did all these 70's and newer modern cars/ hot rods come with chrome valve covers? looks like a Cal Custom nite mare. and 350's in place of the classic 283 or 327 if you go the other make.

Mine has to be taking a great, original example of anything and the tacking on modern parts such as rally wheels, chrome valve covers, velour tuck and roll upholstery, cd players, dual exhaust, etc.

I know that they are theirs for others to do what they like, but it's to me a shame to take a piece of history and "individualizing" it. What happens more often than not is these "upgrades" make them look more like the rest of the flock rather than unique.

Try and find a totally stock car in a car show nowadays...rare. When I go to a show I appreciate seeing what cars looked like when they were new. I have to use my imagination more and more.

I totally agree, and hate to see modern wheels on an otherwise good old car. It's hard to find any car from the 40's, 50's, or 60's that still has the original wheels and hub caps.

Don't misunderstand me. velour interior may look good on a george Barris custom, but to alter an otherwise beautiful old car is a sin. once the history is changed it will be forgotten. they won't remember the sound of a flathead V8 or the sound of a hudson 8 or orphin cars that were lost in modern history ie: crosley, austin, perserve and restore don't reinvent the wheel.

Parents justification of their kids being rude to your car after leaving finger prints all over it..."it is just an old car"

on the other hand: I do commend the parents that when they see their kids heading towards you car, like it is a big piece of candy say "don't touch"!

I always say thank you....

I took the woody to the grocery store several months ago-- as I was getting in to head home, a lady asked me "where did you get it...did you rent it?" I quickly replied, "yeah, I rented it from Avis. But they only have these at the airport locations." I couldn't believe the question, but I laughed to myself the whole way home.

Skeezixx,

You first have to show them how to open the doors. I get a kick of how they look at the boot. Then ask how do you lock the truck or open it.???

THIS is what annoys me the most, every aspect of the car down to the engine colors is correct (or at least looks of that era) then they throw some cheap american racing rims on it. its like did you run outa money to properly buy/restore the wheels??? most rims of those eras are being reproduced same with the hubcaps...

I too like seeing completely stock cars especially when you can hear them run as they are surprisingly quiet.

I do open the hood on my chevette at cruise ins as the hood paint is not pretty to look at and not that many people remember/know they were rwd.

People that have forgotten that it's about having some fun with a old car. I remember being 12 years old and getting a old VW Beetle running and driving that I had bought for $12.00. A whole summer of cutting lawns, gathering pop bottles and what ever else I could do it raise the money. That was the first and the best day of Old CARS.

1. In the advert, "needs restored" "needs rebuilt" "needs repaint" etc. (I know, it's a grammar problem... but really!)
2. Bright red or bright blue velour. (don't brothels look like that?)
3. "Cars" for sale (especially in the snowy mid-west) that are obviously a rusted out body set on top of a tired old frame.

I was feeling lazy so took the MGA to an oil change place to have the chassis lubed once and the guy was in a big hurry. "Gimmie the keys" "But....." "Gimmie the keys"

So, I did. I told the girl behind the counter "I bet he can't start it.

So we both watched through the window. Getting in was no problem for this guy, as the top was down he just stepped over the door and squeezed his prodigious bulk behind the 17" wheel, turned the key and looked puzzled. After about ten minutes watching him touch everything on the dash including the horn (much to the delight of the girl), I said I can't take too much more of this.

I walked up to him and casually said "Try pulling the knob marked S." He did and it roared to life. I followed him into the bay and opened the door for him to get out.

I stayed put to show him where all the grease fittings were and to make sure he didn't fill the zerk fittings on the steering rack with grease.

The entertainment value of that experience exceeded the price of the lube job.

Another time I wanted my battery tested so I took it to a battery shop. When the guy said "Open the hood" I did muttering "Ok but I don't know why."

He looked around the engine bay and angrily said "Get this thing outta here mister."

So I did.

When I am asked how fast my model A will go, I say (with a straight face)
"Well I've had it up to almost to 100mph, of course that was on a steep downhill, and I was scared to near death."
I pause and then say "Look at the drivers seat, you will see the brown stain"
Most people will look before they realize what I have done.

1)Improper use of the word "mint". A restored car for example is not mint. It may be as good as new. But something is only mint once. Kind of like virginity- once you lose it, it does not come back.
2) Sellers that make their car sound like #1 condition over the phone but when you get there it is a #4 at best.
3)Use of the phrase by sellers "Must see to appreciate" Every time I have heard that the only thing I could appreciate was what a piece of junk it was.
4)Seller's use of the description "triple black" or other pretentious phrases to describe the color or attribute of a vehicle for sale. All that seems to mean is that the vehicle is over-priced.

Calling a phaeton, or any body for that matter, a "Phantom". I placed this ad in fordbarn a few years ago: For sale- 1930 Model A phantom, pristine condition, last ran when driven into barn, original owner bought it new, very valuable, all original down to the bucket seats, should run. Minor rust. Sorry, no pics. A bargain at $30,000.00 firm. Several people posted comments that I must be a scammer, but no one got the joke.

People who mistreat their antique cars. This can be anything from improper maintenance to hot rodding it.

Also the idea that each antique car destroyed raises the value of those left. Keep the value low, I'd rather there be more antique cars.

Dishonest adds on for sale cars. I once drove 100 miles to check out a model "A" and the add said "drive it home". It was a rusty old chassis with half the sheet metal, and an engine block with no accessories or even a head, with deeply rusted bores that had seen the elements for eons. It was a remote mountain drive and the end of 10 miles of dirt road. When I questioned his drive it home add, he acted insulted, went into a tirade, and told me to never come back. He added to that, he would refuse to sell me any anything.

He obviously wasn't in the real world mentally, because he thought he was driving a car without a head on the engine. There is probably a good reason that he lives at the end of a ten mile dirt road.

The kids and parents usually have big smiles - at least the Kids smile.
Sometimes the parents look a bit concerned!
But in the end they smile and say "Thank You"

I also explain that they can't touch all the cars and this is a special opportunity.

My peeve is people asking me how much my T is worth -

Then I add - $1.00 more than the highest offer.
It usually take someone a few seconds to figure out what I said.

Finding an stock, sometimes even a largely original Ford Model A is super easy, compared to a stock Model B. Try to find a stock 1932 Ford Roadster, and tell me how many you were able to find. If, once in a blue moon, a stock example surfaces, usually in the $70K to $80K range, it's being picked up by somebody like Mike Meyer who wants to build a classic 1940s Hot Rod out of it. And the non-Roadsters were bought just for their bones, whereas the body was scrapped.

Over the years I have developed a number of stock answerers to the Model A FAQs.

How fast will it go? I don't know, the speedometer only reads up to 85MPH.

Whatta ya take for it? I could let you have it for what Grandpa gave for it. How much was that? He swapped 40 acres and a mule!

My favorite is a true story. The Model A huckster my kids used for highschool events was parked in front of the shop and attracted a sight seer. Is that your old A Model out front? Yes sir. What would you say if a man wanted to buy that car? Well, I would be forced to tell him the kids used the car for school events and they had 3 more years of school. And what would you say if a man offered 10,000 dollars for that car? In that case I would be forced to say My My, how time flies!

Rainmaker,
Good to hear from ya. Ref. you note above, I thought for 10K you would have throwed the kids in the deal(:>)

Last year was good for my cars. More good Qs and waves than annoyances. We established a cross-hobby breakfast series in our area. Model A/eV-8ers and trainics gather once a month at the local diner for eggs and warm chat. Our ladies jump as going out for breakfast and the good chat about almost anything. This event is really working to improve the camaraderie between us all. As you guys know: a collector is a collector.

gwhite, Good point! My 1. pet Peeve is people who complain about the people who ask dumb questions! what do you expect when you drive any classic vehicle to a public venue? people are curious by nature and will always ask questions, dumb or not. deal with it, or leave it in the garage! Pet Peeve 2. DO NOT TOUCH! signs, they are tacky and only seam to attract people to touch all over a car, just as a Wet Paint sign is sure to make someone touch to see if it really is wet. It seams to me, that the grumpy guy that spends the entire day at a show guarding his car from his lawn chair(afraid to take a piss in fear that someone will touch his paint) is the guy that always has all the problems....maybe it's just karma!

Wherever we go in our model a's we are ambassadors for our hobby so making snide remarks to dumb questions make people think we are like the parking lot show hot rodders that act like guard dogs for their precious jewels. We all say we want our hobby grow and thrive so we need to make it look as fun as it really is.

That is very true. These are teaching moments. No one likes to be made fun of. Correct them, smile, thank them for their interest or compliment, and let them walk away thinking, what a nice guy you are. I have been turned off more times than I can remember on a potential hobby or interest, because my first introduction to it turned out to be an interaction with a "good ol' boys club". A legitimate question asked resulted in a smart ass reply, and winking between "members". While 20 feet away a membership sign up table sits. Ya, I want to be a part of that group.

I have to agree....ask me anything you want....it's how I learned. I also don't like the look but don't touch signs...kind of snooty. I'm in it to make friends, have fun and to preserve some history. I see it a lot at the few shows I go to....some nice folks want to ask you something or just talk in general but the are stand offish because they were snubbed by some of the other owners....not good.

Am I the only one who kind of hangs back in the crowd and watches other people looking over the car? That's my favorite part...being an anonymous "show goer" and hearing the comments people make both positive and negative, the stories they tell the people they're with, the "facts" or facts they point out, etc. By the way, most people are very respectful of the car.

Not really a pet peeve, but hey, whatever.

Or to see some jerk with a cigarette in his hands come up and lean into your car (with smoke going everywhere and filtering into the upholstery) while he was admireing the inside of your car.

Not good!

....and I have had the same experiences as Smurkey...the VAST majority of people that look at my car ARE polite and careful around it. I'd venture to say probably 98% of the people so looking at it from that point of view,,,,yeah there are still a lot of really good folks out there the bottom hasn't fallen out yet I guess.

That's sure true. A '32 Ford is a thing of beauty. Especially a Roadster or a three window coupe IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. I wouldn't walk across the street to look at a '32 that has been rodded. It's the same as taking a Michelangelo art work and spray painting graffiti all over it Yuck! That just makes an original unmolested '32 that much more attractive.

Mine is the car guys that get pissed at me because I encourage the kids to get in my truck and if you want a picture of you in the truck, sure I'll take it.
They say I give everyone the Idea the cars are here for fun instead of a pretty look at me show buy stay your distance or I'll bitch at you. I guess I would rather spark an interest instead of spoil some ones vision of car guys

well the way i always interpreted this was lets say for a 1974 car it has 27,000 original miles. To me that says the cars engine and body and interior havent been apart or restored and thats how it was found. Meaning as the car left the factory its done XXXX ammount of miles. Yes its technically not correct but i feel the term original is partially said in slang. much like a used car dealer saying $2700 is twenty seven hundred dollars. sounds better haha.

Its incredibly easy to roll back a speedometer and alot of people did once they rebuilt or replaced the engine with new this it may show 27K but its 27K on the rebuilt engine while the body has 120K miles...So when one says original miles id take that as it only has 27K miles and thats all its ever had on all components of the car.

I know that the "How much is that car worth?" question is annoying. But it's that question (sort of) that brought me into this hobby 17 years ago. My boss had bought himself a Model A coupe and could NOT stop talking about it. Yak! Yak! Yak! This went on for several weeks. Because he was the boss, I had to listen politely to all his stories. Even when he told the same ones five times.

One day I said, "Sounds like fun." He replied, "Why don't you go buy one for yourself?" I said I could never afford such an expensive toy. He asked how much I thought a restored Model A would cost. I had no clue and said, "I don't know...I guess $50 to $75 thousand or so...." I really had no clue whatsoever. He replied, "This may surprise you, but it's hard to spend more than $12,000 on a restored Model A." (Keep in mind, this was in the middle 1990s.)

I was truly shocked by what he told me. That discussion happened on a Thursday. The following Sunday my wife and I purchased our first Model A, a 1929 Town Sedan. Since then we've become 100% antique car people. We've owned nearly 20 Model A's and Flathead Fords. I've completely restored four of them. Our garage now holds five toy cars, all but one from the 1930s. All our vacations are given to touring in antique Fords. We belong to several car clubs.

Point here is that by providing a thoughtful answer to the question (What's that car worth?), you just might bring a newcomer into the hobby. It happened to me.

Final point: If asked that question today, I'd respond this way: "It all depends on mechanical and cosmetic condition. But with that said, there are lots of decent driveable Model A's around that can be bought for $12-$20 thousand. So go buy yourself some fun. You'll never regret it."

I would agree with Texas Tom "mostly". Answering "What is it worth", or What are they selling for today" is one thing, and can be answered very truthfull as Tom points out.

The part that comes into play that I don't particularily like is "How much did you pay for it?" Well, my friend bought his 29 Tudor about 20 years ago for, let's say $2,500. Then he spent the next 8 years restoring it, not really keeping track of how much he spent on it over that period of time. So telling someone he paid $2,500 for it doesn't tell the whole story. I could tell pretty much the same story on my 31 PU. What I paid for it 4 years ago doesn't even come close to what it's worth now.

I also agree with Texas Tom. I never mind telling what I paid for something. Sometimes I get a real bargain and sometimes I find out I paid too much. It's all fun and I can't take it with me, so just try to enjoy what you can afford to buy. BTW, the other day I bought a nice older Delta/Rockwell jointer/planer with factory stand and motor and even a dust collector for $24. This was at a second hand store, and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It even has a RED V belt.

This reminds me of a sign I saw at a show that said " Don't even think about touching this car unless your naked". The owner was sitting in his lawn chair next to the car keeping an eye on it. I kicked off my shoes and had my belt undone and pants unbuttoned before he offered to let me sit in it clothed. I guess 275lbs of greasy naked white boy wasn't what he had in mind!!!!!!!

I have an information sign that I put on my truck. At the end it says
"Go ahead and touch. Not much paint left to scratch" I see a lot of smiles when they read that last part and most reach out and give it a touch.

I have to disagree with Texas Tom. Being a Midwesterner , I have been raised up to NEVER ask such questions or answer them. It is incredibly rude. It just isn't done. It shows immaturity of the person asking you that.

Classic case was Johnny Carson, if you ever read about the guy (born and raised in Nebraska) that was his biggest pet peeve. Example of what I mean.

I guess I just don't get it with the price bothering people. You can go to any used car lot and see car prices, so why not know the price of an antique car that was purchased. Most times the price is just the starting point anyway since the car will usually need many repairs and corrections to make it right.

It's not like they are asking the price of a gift they recieved.

It depends on how it is asked. If they seem truly interested, I tell them. Otherwise, I inform them a Model A can be purchased for a pack of cigarettes a day for five years. ($5.00 a pack for 365 days =$9.125)

I'm with Tom W. and the others who don't mind if asked. Asking the cost is one of the "Buying signs" that indicate interest. The person is interested and is curious about the costs. Whether or not they follow through pretty much depends on a lot of subsequent factors. But at that moment, he likes what he sees and he's wondering. I never saw the presumed "rudeness" of asking the cost of something. What do you want, for me to remain in the dark and stupid?

Those who refer to the "zero" ("0") as an "Oh" (the letter O) when citing a number...I do it...we all do it!

Such as A390..."A-Three-Nine-Oh".

BTW, the other day I bought a nice older Delta/Rockwell jointer/planer with factory stand and motor and even a dust collector for $24. This was at a second hand store, and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It even has a RED V belt.
I invented a fun reply when asked "What did it cost you" while filling up at a gas station:

"Well, a little old lady hired me to clean out her garage, I found this in it under a pile of boxes. When I asked her about it she replied that goes too.
I charged her $200"
