Default 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 battery

What year did Ford stop putting the long narrow battery?

I believe the 29NF was used 1956-64.

I am not sure what you mean by your car taking a regular battery. The 29NF was used in most Fords from 1956-64. It would have been the regular battery in your car. Someone has changed it to a different size since it rolled off the assembly line.

Can't think of too many car batteries that aren't rectangular

That was my thought as well. When I bought my 63.5 Galaxie in 2013, it had a repro of that style, but it soon died and I just replaced it with a new battery, as I wasn't concerned (totally) with originality.

I changed my 57 over to a glass-matt battery. Took a bit if doing, since I didn't want to cut anything up beyond the top mounting ring. You really have to do your homework to do this, as no one makes a glass-matt battery that fits these 1956-1964 cars. Getting it (a unit) to be short enough so as not to dent the inside/outside of the hood was a major consideration.

I wanted the most amount of power I could get, with reliability. It sure cost me too $$$
