Default 56 Fairlane Trim Holes

Hi Everybody, I recently picked up a 56 Mainline and I want to change it to Fairlane trim, but I can't find any specs on where to drill the holes. Especially the front and back hole in the door. If I had that, I could figure out the rest of them.

If it came from the factory as a Mainline, it will always be a Mainline, even if you drill holes in the hood and trunk for the Fairlane script. The model of the car is determined by the VIN plate, not the body script. BTW, that VIN is also etched into the car frame too.

Right been there done that. I was under the influence that there just may (or may not) be a member with an original Fairlane door sans trim. Maybe measure down from the lock hole and from the top of the fender in the front. If someone could be so kind as to accomplish this menial yet priceless task for moi; I would be forever in their debt..

Tripower, Did you receive the car without any trim on it? If you did, I can maybe see why you want to change it to a higher level of trim. The Fairlane trim for that year was pretty dramatic.

I personally agree with Dave. I own a '54 Mainline Ranch Wagon, and I think people aren't any less impressed with it because of the low end trim status. I know that I'm prouder of the car because I haven't "improved" it. My biggest regret in owning old cars was the time I tried to convert a '67 Lemans with a 326 into a GTO. Some people do "clones" for this model because GTO's bring big money, but I don't think the value difference between Fairlanes and Mainlines is as dramatic.

If your set on doing it, however, I wonder if this body "assembly manual" for 1956 might have the information you need. I bought one of the electrical assembly manuals for my '65 Thunderbird the other day, and it's great, but I don't know if the body manual will have the exact dimensional reference you're looking for. It might have other good info on putting on the trim and show the exact fasteners used. Good luck.

I'm just trying to relive my misspent youth. It was a 56 Fairlane; jacked up, satin black, straight axle. Springfield, Illinois; circa 1967.

Thanks 54. Yes I'm looking for the dimension from the bottom of the lock hole down to the middle of the trim hole on the outside of the door; plus the dimension from the top of the door in the front down to the middle of the trim hole. Or I guess the dimension from the bottom; just one of those should do.

the front hole..21 9/16 "from bottom edge of painted door
back hole...18 5/16 " from bottom
That is the best I can do with the trim on. I miss read your post, thinking you wanted the measures on the front fenders, dont have the trim on those yet.
I think the measurements are pretty damn accurate. but if someone else wants to chime in to confirm they are welcome to.

By, "pretty damn accurate" do you mean + or - 4"? Just holding it up there it looks like maybe 25 9/16" at the front..

no. it means less than a 1/16 . I will check again but we need to be sure we are talking about the same clip.
I am measuring front most hole. it is within 1/2 inch of the front edge of the door. the hole goes thru the 1/2 inch pinched area of the door skin
