I posted in the want ads and hope to find a vintage Mallory or model B distributor and downdraft manifold. Thanks, Greg.

I've got a B distributor that I think is usable. But, I won't be able to get to it until Friday.

Thanks Steve. Bill, It looks like they are no longer available, and I have heard those newer ones were not that good out of the box. I am not set on anything at this point so I appreciate any opinions on this.

Why not just go with a stock distributor?

Thanks, Bob. I am definitely not ruling out Bubbas, I am sort of interested in period correct, if possible, but am open in my mind. I am going to do high compression head, downdraft stromberg and tube header. The Bubbas is starting to make more sense though!

If you are going with all the above mods, why don't you get an FSI zipper distributor? They look very close to the originals.

Nose, I basically did the same thing you are doing and I used a "B" distributor on mine. I was going to get one of Bubbas Mallory's, but he was in the process of moving and said he would get back to me in a few weeks. Mean while I had the B so I used it. Works fine for me.

In the UK a period mod was to fit the centrifugal advance distributor from the little sidevalve Popular/Prefect/Anglia engine

They drop straight in

Thousands of these cars imported to the US so there must be some still kicking about. There are two versions, the short one looks just like a Model B dizzy, the tall one as per the pics

I have a Stromberg 97 and an FS Zipper. Very pleased with that set-up.

Ford Holley 94. Easy to re-jet and easy to adjust. Starts easy and response nice for me. Just my 2 1/2 cents.

Bill. I was just looking for advice and opinions...so "what I heard" did not jive with your experience and now your "sorry I posted anything"? I value and respect your knowledge and opinion along with everyone else's here. Sorry, if you took that as disregarding your help? That was not my intention. I received my B distributor today from Ken Parker and guess I will just forge on with my plan.

Let us know how it turns out. Good luck with it. Some times you just have to look at the source when it comes to comments.

Yes please post how it goes! I'm running a B head at the moment, plan on using a Holley 94 and headers, also researching which distributor to buy. Curious how much the B dist will "wake the car up" compared to manually adjusting, and if the Mallory is much better than the B.

Bob
As a result of this item, I purchased a Mallory distributor from Bubba (Jim Linder) and have just installed it.
I was surprised at how comprehensive the kit was, with coil, shaft and Nu Rex timing indicator.
The installation was simple although I felt regret at losing the manual advance and retard and associated linkages, the winged distributor cap and the theft proof cable. The engine bay does look tidier.
To my delight, the cold motor started more promptly than normal and idled smoothly. There was no pinking which could happen previously with indelicate use of the throttle and with the spark advanced a fraction too far.
I had convinced myself that the idling problems I was experiencing was because the twin Stromberg carburettors were causing the motor to be over-carburetted, but the Mallory distributor provided perfect idling.
Most importantly the motors rev range has been improved and the all round driveability has been substantially improved.
Whilst no longer looking original, this improvement is really worthwhile.

I have an FS Ignition's distributor called the "Zipper" installed in my 31 coupe. It looks like a stock "A" distributor and has counter weights for the centrifugal advance function. It also has a solid state electronic ignition module in place of points. This unit makes driving my A a real joy. Engine starting is virtuallly instant. Traveling up hills provides automatic advance for optimal engine performance. The advance retard lever on the column is locked and is strictly used for looks.

Bert's for the distributor Dave Renner for the modern top plate. It's a thing of beauty.
