Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
The biggest issue is bolts breaking off. Use plenty of penetrant and patience. Maybe a little heat from a torch. If you break one off on a manifold, accessibility with the proper tools to remove the broken bolt is going be tough. I’m sure others will add more advice.....Mark

Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
If the previous installer used anti seize you will be lucky.
Do as flathead ford8 says. Be sure to use antiseize on the reinstall. I think there are two different size bolts. I also used 2 gaskets on each port for a good fit. |

Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
Have you tried to tighten the offending locations.
May just stop the leaks without having to replace gaskets.

Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
as 51 suggested but I would add warm up the engine first as the heat will make it easier.try turning left before right as that may save breaking the bolts good luck

Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
Turning left first will break it loose then right to try and tighten them. Same goes for removing them. I’ve never had luck with double gaskets. Always had a leak between them. If you do take the manifolds off, you can make sure the’re flat and get a good seal. If you repair it the best you can this time, you probably won’t have to mess with it again. Got any pictures of your car?.... Mark

Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
OK, only reason I ask is because you said turn the threads left 1st... which is the way that you would turn them if you were going to loosen them. Were you trying to say to tighten them up a bit before proceeding to loosen them?

Quote:
" Have you tried to tighten the offending locations." The quote from my previous post asked. The procedure that I generally use is to crack the bolt loose first (turn left) which will give some indication if the bolt is loose. Then (turn right) to tighten. This is to determine if leaks will seal without having to replace the gasket/s.

Re: 49 Custom exhaust leaks
I just replaced the manifold gaskets on passenger side of my truck with no problems.I suggest you get a new can of PB Blaster(the new cans are designed to spray no matter how you hold the can!) and constantly soak the bolts for about a week or or so and tap the tops of the bolt heads with a hammer.Once you get ready to loosen bolts crank up engine and let it get as hot as you can get it.Gently start loosening the bolts and hopefully they will back off freely.
