Default starter to oil pan support bracket mystery

Hello,
I have a question regarding a small bracket used to support the starter motor to the oil pan. I would guess to protect the ring gear on start ups.
My problem is that I can't see how it attaches to my to my engine or if it ever had one. MY CAR IS A 1937 FORD 21 stud , 221 inch 85hp. Someone has told me these brackets were used on 239 engines. Is this true?
Thanks,
Rich

It would bolt under one of the oil pan bolt heads. DD

My guess is to support the starter motor, and prevent all that weight from bouncing up and down and straining / breaking those long skinny through bolts that holds the starter together as well as the whole assembly to the bellousing

Main function is to keep starter straight when the gear engages the flywheel. The very high torque of the motor can twist the angle of attack. A lot of starter Bendix problems have been solved by adding the bracket if it was missing. Don't forget to put the bracket on before you run the bolt thru the starter when you assemble it!

I don't think that bracket was introduced until late in 1938.

I think V8coopman's post gives enough visual info to easily fabricate one yourself. I have made several.

If the bracket is missing, torque from the starter will eventually warp the oil pan attach point to the point the starter will not engage. Ask me how I know!!

My early 38 21-stud starter never had, and still doesn't have, the mysterious bracket. It started good without one on 6V when I first got the car in 1958 till I installed the requisite SBC in 1961. Then I re-installed the 21-studder with the same starter only running 12V about 6 years ago still without the bracket. And it starts even better. And I don't intend to fix this situation anytime soon. 8^) Jack E/NJ
