Default 35/36 Pickup Crank Hole Repair

Hello Folks.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been on here and I figured it’s about time I share. As some of you know, I’ve been restoring a ‘36 pickup. I haven’t had much time lately to work on it, but a few days ago I started to tackle making a new crank hole piece to repair the missing section on my grill. I know many of these grills are missing this piece or it’s at least damaged beyond repair. Is this a piece that some of you old Ford pickup guys would be interested in? If so, I am willing to spend the time to make tooling to make a dozen or two, maybe more if needed. I machined the male half of the tooling in order to stamp one or two with a urethane die for the female side, but in order to make more, I’d have to make a steel or aluminum female die. I can offer the correct shape grill bars as well if needed.

I’m attaching a picture of the rough draft. I still need to figure out the blank shape to have the correct end result, but it’s close. Hope everyone is well.

Thanks Mercman.

Please know I’m not trying to peddle goods on this site. Just trying to offer pieces for other peoples pickups that I’ve needed to make for my own.

Thanks

That looks nice, how close is that to a '34 pickup or big truck?

As deuce lover correctly stated, the Crank Handle Hole on the 1934 Ford Pick-Up Grille is very different to the ones on the 1936 Ford Pick-Up Grilles. Refer to above picture.

I just wish that had been available a few years back when I was working on my grill. That is for the tall hole grill. (There were two sizes, height wize) of crank holes in 35-36. Depended on the maker I guess.

Sorry for the delay. Had to leave town for a family matter. I will be machining the female die today and should have the pieces ready as soon as late this week, and will reach out to those who have contacted me.

Thanks

I am ready to start making these crank hole repair sections for the 35 and 36 pickups. I have played around with different blanks to stamp these from, and the finished result is in the pictures below. I’m unsure if there are any other years that have the same crank hole. I have been told that there are long crank holes as well as short crank holes for these pickups. The one I am making is the long version, but shortening one isn’t too complicated if you can weld.

I’m still trying to determine a price, which is harder than it sounds. My goal is to break even, but I’m not sure if that’ll be possible with how much time I’ve spent programming, machining the tooling, and everything else that went into it. Does $65 sound fair?

Your price seems reasonable to me. There's a whole lot of time and effort you must have already put into this project. Thank you for making this available.
Just FYI, the 1935 and 1936 pickups and big trucks used the same grille shell and one reason for the elongate crank hole is that these two different models had different crank alignments. One of the pictures earlier shows this if you look closely at the lower grille shell panel behind the grille. It has two holes, one for the trucks and one for the pickups.

Sounds dirt cheap to me. Don't need one BUT very nice work.

Thanks for the kind words!

Kirkf, I machined male and female dies to be able to stamp them. The sheetmetal blanks are laser cut.

Just thought I’d share the final product. Laser cut 20g cold rolled steel and die stamped. I tried to get the relief cuts and tangs on the back side of the stamping correct. It is pretty darn close to the 36 grill I have used as a guide for this project. Glad this one is done and successful. Now to fix my 35 grill and then start fixing my fenders. There is a possibility that I’ll be offering fender sections if I have to make tooling to repair mine. Thanks again for all the kind words. If any of you are still in need of one of these crank hole repair pieces, let me know. I still have some left.

Thanks,
Josh

I think that people are thankful that you made this quality repair piece. The quality is excellent, the price is more than fair. You should refrain from making the short version until you get enough orders to make it worth your while. People could make their short hole grill into a long hole grill with this repair piece. What is the difference in the 2 grills other than one is short, the other is long ? Different supplier ?

Thanks, and I agree with the point you made. As far as the difference in length, I have seen them long and short. I only had access to a grill with a long crank hole, which was a '36. I'm not sure if '35 had long and short as well. It is easy enough to make the long a short. It's easier than making a short version long.
