1935 v8 engine, can a 1939/48 cam be used in it?

I want to know if I can do this before ordering a cam, I already have a two bolt distributor front cover on it. Thanks, Norm

It will fit and work but not exactly as new. Ford changed the valve angle. The later engines had the valves further from the cylinders. A later cam will have half the valves opening sooner and half later. I don’t know if it would be noticeable.

I think there is some debate about if the cam timing was actually changed when the valve locations were moved.

I have used many 39-41 Cams in Early engines to take advantage of the bolt on cam gear with zero issues. Remember if you use the late 42-48 cam you would have to use a adapter to use the original 3 bolt distributor. But since you are using a two bolt timing cover itwould make best sense to use a 42-48 cam.. I have done such and noticed no issues. PS why is everyone so insistent with the two bolt distributor rather than a 3 bolt converted to later internals?

my guess is the crab is shorter, and easier to fit in spaces like Av8's, or 8ba's in older cars. and, like my hero Bruce Lancaster said, "only 2 bolts, no vacuum line, the cap comes off with 2 clips, it can be removed in the dark with one wrench to fix it to get you home"
