Default Engine Painting

Head is off, valve cover off and I am repainting both and then will try to paint the rest of the engine in place. I have a few dumb questions that some of you could help me with.

Do the machined flats for the head bolts and spark plugs on the head get painted? I can see that it looks like my Roadster that was painted back in the 60's might not have had them painted and it appears to have rusted around all those areas.

Is the intake manifold engine green or black?

Is the water pump green or black. Here again the Roadster is green but the water pump I am rebuilding is black???

Do you paint your exhaust manifold or leave it unpainted? I have bought new matching exhaust and intake manifolds and the intake is painted black from the dealer.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich -

All castings would generally be painted engine green (engine, head, water pump, and intake manifold; stamped pieces, etc. would be black (e.g. starter, generator, oil pan). The two exceptions that come to mind would be the distributor casting (black) and the carburetor (also black). I would recommend at a minimum spraying the exhaust manifold with some sort of dark gray or black heat resistant paint, although you may also wish to consider having the manifold coated. Terry Mobley over in Jonesboro at Performance Coatings is an old car guy, and has heat resistant finishes available for manifolds as well as powder coating for wheels and other parts. Many of us on the south side of town have been pleased with his product. Good luck with your project.

Dick

That only means someone has been at it since it left the showroom. Most engines have been reworked, and in the 40's, 50's, 60's rebuilders used any color they wanted. Today most of us just want to make things as they were originally. That is, some shade of "Ford Green" which was a mix of leftovers and varied one batch to another. For the original look, all green parts should be the same shade close to what is now accepted as 'Ford engine green".

I think oil pans were gloss black. Snyders carries a very authentic looking Ford Engine Green paint is spray cans.

The steel seamed tube for the generator wire (used in 28 and 29) is also gloss black.

"The engine was assembled after the individual parts
were painted and therefore all gaskets were unfinished."

Page 1-18 of the Revised 2016 restoration guidelines has a chart of engine compartment finishes.

Yes Snyder's and Bratton's paint looks good to me, and when I got paint the last time I ordered from both. Same brand, same can, same color.

Thanks to all for the help. I will paint the top of all the flat bosses on the head. And I will try some of the high temp black for the exhaust manifold. The engine was blue on this town sedan from some time back when, and I don't like it.

I did buy a can of Ford Engine Green a while back and it is a very dark almost black green. Much different than what my Roadster engine looks like when we rebuilt it back in Paige Model A days. One of the guys in the club here said it is the color that was painted in Canada and not the US???

Right now I am mixing the 2 parts John Deere green with 1 part black and it is almost exactly what my Roadster color is.

Off to work now.

I had the same problem with a spray can of Ford engine green, that looked more black than green. I wonder if a bad batch went through a few years ago?

The last two cans I picked up at Little Dearborn look good, and I think they came from Snyder's.

Your engine long block was painted after it was assembled. Not while it was still in pieces. So the machined faces relieved paint after the nuts and bolts were installed.
All cast iron parts are green while all sheet metal parts are black.
Simple enough that even I figured it out.

If it was an engine made for use in anything other than a car it would be a Diamond Block.
