Default Rebuilding flathead water pump

I’m looking to rebuild some 8rt truck pumps and in the process swap them over to the thinner 3/8 wide pulley. My engines accessories are all thin pulley. Maybe I should swap to the wider? I do have a Mcculloch super charger.

Anyway I made a custom split plate that helps me remove the original pulleys with out damage however when I go to push the shaft and impellor out, the housing cracks.

This time the shaft and impeller pushed out about an inch until the end was flush with the bearing.

Is there a better way to keep the housing from cracking or is it a crapshoot . Should I make a fixture and drill/ bore the shaft and bearing out

I guess I could just buy new pumps and swap the pulleys

Your taking the pump apart backwards. There's another snap ring in the bottom of the bearing bore its located there so the shaft and pulley assembly is installed at the correct height. This lower snap ring cannot be removed with the pump is assembled.
The correct way to disassemble the pump is to remove the outer snap ring located on the pulley end of the pump housing casting {if there's one there} then you push the bearing and pulley assembly out of the housing from the impeller end. The impeller usually gets damaged as well as the old seal however both of those parts are in the rebuild kit. When the pulley and old bearing shaft assembly are now removed its a simple task to remove the pulley.

Pickups, trucks, and the early 1949 cars all used wide belt accessories with a few exceptions. The 50 through 53 Ford & Mercury passenger and the 53 F100 all used narrow belts with a few exceptions. The major problem is that most passenger car and F100 pumps had pulleys with no back spacing like the pickup and truck pump pulleys have. This will make alignment of all your belts the part to worry about I've heard of folks using the double sheave pulleys that came on some larger trucks but I don't know about how that will work out with a McCulloch supercharger. The generator would have to be offset but that is doable since head and manifold offset mounts are still available for flathead V8s. There are likely some McCulloch set ups on the HAMB forum.
