1939 Electrical Modification: FUSE BLOCK & CIGAR LIGHTER SOCKET
I just bought the following:
WUPP Boat Fuse Block, Waterproof Fuse Panel with LED Warning Indicator Damp-Proof Cover - 12 Circuits with Negative Bus Fuse Box Holder for Car, Marine, RV, DC 12-24V, Fuses Included and this.......... Nilight, 2 Pack Car Cigarette Lighter Socket DC 12V Waterproof Power Outlet Adapter Replacement with Terminals Wires and Screws for Boat, Car,Truck, RV, ATV, from Amazon with the purpose of being able to charge my 4G smart phone and use my GPS Map, Spot light, Fog Lights, Dash Cam, Cabin light, etc, etc. The plan is to wire the fuse block directly to the Positive Ground 12V battery, coming thru the firewall with 4 or 6 AWG wire, and mount the fuse box on the inside of the firewall. Just wondering if anyone else has done this? Is it overkill on my part? Does something like this exist on a 39 Ford? Positive comments and constructive criticism will be appreciated. I got the idea from watching a Paul Shinn You Tube on installing a Power Outlet on a Model A, 6V, Positive Ground system so his wife could charge her Smart phone on long excursions. A 6V battery will also charge a smart phone so there is no need to convert to 12V, but mine was already converted.

Overkill? You have to ask? Tell your wife to never leave the house without charging her phone.

Pos ground will be a problem for your electronic accessories. You could wire your fuse box for neg ground though to the battery terminals and leave the car 12 volt pos ground. Or change your car to 12volt neg ground but you may have to do something with your charging system or ignition system depending what is fitted there. Regards, Kevin.

I always wondered why guys buy an 80 year old car and then modify them to be more akin to a modern car.

Re: 1939 Electrical Modification: FUSE BLOCK & CIGAR LIGHTER SOCKET
Positive or negative ground turns out to be not that important with the stuff available these days. Everything is enclosed in plastic cases so you need to run two wires to it anyway. And, it's so cheap that if it gets wiped out by a voltage spike, replacement is not a problem.
I found this out after developing a totally isolated, clean power 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground booster unit. It seems that I should have been chasing 30 year old broads. |
