New Cut out, no lights

I put a new cut out because I did not have one on the car and now the lights and the horn don't work. I used my test light and I have power coming in to the cut out but not coming out. Is the cut out bad? The guy told me that I needed 6 volt battery and pos. ground which I have. Looking for a solution.

Looking at the gen in the car the front of the cutout you should have the horn/light wire attached to the cut out.should also be a nylon washer between wires and cut out

That is on the "battery" side of the cut-out. See the diagram above left.

Check your frame ground, your battery connections starting at the battery and working your way up to the generator using the diagram as your roadmap.

If it will turn over when you press on the button with your foot, you can skip the big cable stuff (possibly)

Check your ammeter. The ammeter is made like a "fusible link" and will burn out to open circuit under greater than 20 amps (like if you brush the wire and momentarily ground a live connection.)

The power wire and the light wires fasten to each other, BOTH on the output side of the cutout. Sounds like you have the power wire on one side of the cutout and the lights wire on the other side of the cutout.

What Steve said!

Not that it matters, but if you MUST have + ground, then this sounds like a diode cutout. The stock cutout can be used with either ground.

Make sure both terminals have the insulators in place to keep the terminals from touching the cover. As Steve said, the horn/lights wire terminal goes on the OUTPUT side of the cutout, along with the wire going to the terminal box.

So the wire coming from the battery and the wire to the lights must attach to the same side of the cut out? Looking over the fender, the wires are on the right hand side of the cut out and the left side is only attached to the generator. Right?

That's right IF the generator output is on the front end of the generator.

After about March 1930 the generator output stud was moved to the rear end of the generator, so then the horn/light terminal and the terminal box wire would both be on the front side (left side) of the cutout.

Anyway, it's easy to remember that ONLY the generator output stud connects to the cutout input terminal, and any other wires connect to the output side of the cutout.
