Lawrie since your not in a country where Flathead blocks are plentiful any longer if it was me i would be conservative and use .040 rings but I would eliminate that awful bottom oil ring saving additional weight. You end up saving the block for a future rebuild maybe not for yourself but the next lucky guy who ends up with it maybe 30 years from now. Heck most stock rebuilds we do these days with four ring pistons that bottom ring is always thrown away. Doing this helps reduce friction thus reducing heat and best of all additional gas mileage.
