Default 55 crown vic 12v Gen to 3 wire Alt

Hi all, changed out 12v generator to 3 wire alternator, I connected the wire from generator light to A terminal on voltage regulator to the alternator, Everything seems to work like it should, gen light go goes out when started alternator is charging all seems good but there is a drain on battery next morning not enough juice to start motor. Voltage regulator is still wired, Do I need to disconnect voltage regular? If so please tell me what I do with with the wires on A, F, B. New wiring diagram would be greatly appreciated. 1955 Crown Vic. 1957 292 motor 12volt.

I hope you didn't hook up the alternator to the old generators voltage regulator did you?

Looking to do the same on my Edsel. Looking at a Ford 1G 65 AMP and a comparable voltage Regulator. R400P

Any advice.

There’s a lot of things I haven’t seen, but all the “3 wire alternators” especially the GM ones seem to have internal regulators. That means the old gen reg has to be bypassed. Years ago I bought an alternator conversion for my ‘bird, and it contained instructions on which reg wires to connect, jump, etc. so it looked kind of stock, didn’t take a lot of wire, etc. You need to have a copy of that (which I’m sure someone has).

The good news is if the wiring insulation is still good, the 6 volt wiring is carrying half the usual load at 12 volts.

I don’t know what happens when you series two regulators on a system, but I’ll bet it isn’t good. I’d fix it before I drove it more.

So the local parts store has a CARQUEST 1967 Ford Galaxie alternator part #7058A
with an external regulator for the same car. BWD part #R400P and was going to swap these in.

Thanks for the diagram.

If you can find the correct period car in the junkyard, you can strip the ALT harness out of the main harness. You can also buy a specialty harness.

My engine was a 63 truck with a 12V generator and exterior VR. It's also 3 wire. I found NPD has the bracket kit so that is easy.

Might be time to convert the Distributor to HEI too.

... ah ... The old CHEV nightmare ...

Agreed the GM HEI is a damn good design but it looks so out of place on a FORD. There are two systems, one a large cap (includes IGN COIL) and a small cap (remote coil).

The small cap would look nicer (IMO) as only the most experienced would be able to single it out.

None of my business what you do with your vehicle, but just sayin' ...
