1931 Tudor slows down going up hills
Does anyone have an idea why my new engine form H&H has a problem going up hills. It operates very well on relativiley flat roads but on medium to steep hills I slow donw real bad. Timeimg has been checked, dowble checked and triple checked. The plugs are buring correctly. Give me some other suggestions
Thanks |

Two things: 1) gravity, and crap in the fuel line?

Can you call H&H and get some feedback from them? I would think this would be something they would be VERY interested in knowing ASAP.

What is the final drive gear ratio? Have you checked compression yet?

Re: 1931 Tudor slows down going up hills
reground cam where the heel was not ground, thus decreasing overall lift. I have seen cams like this where the lift ends up being only .289 or thereabouts instead of the correct .302

I'd try opening the choke mixture 1/4 turn and see if extra fuel isn't what it needs.

Have you tried adjusting your spark lever on steeper hills?

Check accelerator linkage to make sure throttle is fully open. Have somebody step on gas pedal while you observe throttle. It may be half throttle!

Re: 1931 Tudor slows down going up hills
What are you comparing its uphill performance with? Before it was rebuilt? With other As?
Does fiddling with the GAV make any difference? If it ain't back firing/ running out of gas then probably fuel supply is good. If you're absolutely sure the ign timing is OK then the timing is probably good. Sure you got the manifold gasket nice and no leaks? As Mitch #4 says check exhaust? As Newshirt #14 says check throttle fully opens. If it's running on all 4 cylinders, not misfiring, and idling well, then the ign is probably good. Having eliminated all the easy things it's time to get in touch with the rebuilders and tell them they have a problem to remedy. (All external things being equal I would suspect valve timing/ cam shaft/ valve lift.) |

Re: 1931 Tudor slows down going up hills
First of all, what head are you running? A stock head and compression ratio won't pull hills very good. A Snyder 5.5 to 1 or better, will give more torque for pulling hills.
