Default Popout rebuild question

Anyone have any idea about how to separate the tumbler portion of a popout switch from the locking portion? I'm talking about once the tumbler/contact portion is removed from the main body (which is achieved by loosening a setscrew).

I was wanting to re-plate the popout and the keyhole cover but cannot figure out how to get them off. All the vendors sell replacements for these pieces so I thought it would be within the realm of the shadetree mechanic.

I know there are expert rebuilders out there that will make the switch like new, but I was looking to do it myself...may just have to put 'er in as-is.

once you have the tumbler out. I chuck it up in my lathe and cut the pot metal round the base of the nickel plated ferrule. when they assembled the tumbler they crimped the pot metal over the ferrule on the bottom. it is real easy if you have a lathe. once the ferrule is off the tumbler will come out the front. going back together i use some JB weld under the ferrule. be real careful not to get the JB weld in the tumbler.

Thanks!! I feared there was some metal crimping involved. I guess I'll put it back together as-is...That's OK, I like some old left in the car too.

I had my popout redone by Dick Crabtree in SD and was very pleased with the results. He can make it look and operate like new if that is what you want. His contact info is [email][email protected] 605-487-7229. Good luck.

I have a popout with the same problem for the bezel. I didn't want to do any grinding on it, so I used my "COPY-CAD" home plating kit fron Caswell to plate it. I used the brush, so I didn't have to immerse it. After plating it I used SEMI CHROME to polish it. It's not nickel, but looks better than the nickel worn dirty brass bezel.
