Crack in Clutch Housing
Hey guys!
I started cleaning up my engine today with a wire brush and came across this crack in the clutch housing. Grandpa said he had the engine rebuilt in the 70's so it must have been done then I'm assuming. My main question is, should I begin looking for a replacement or will this get by just fine? You can see the washer was used to draw the bolt tight. Thanks in advanced! |

Re: Crack in Clutch Housing
Bashaw, I'd put a metal spacer behind the top of the washer, tighten it up, & DRIVE that dude. Happy motoring!!

Re: Crack in Clutch Housing
I've had an issue like that on my peekup for six years (bought it that way) and have had no trouble. I'm with Bill. When you restore it or otherwise have to remove the bell housing, then you can replace it. They are easy to find and very inexpensive.

At some point in the future the car will likely need a new clutch, that would be a time to address the issue. Bell housings are easily found at swap meets for very little cost. Pick one up, bead blast and paint it, install a new pedal shaft, clutch release shaft and new bushings and have it ready to swap out the broken one. Tom Endy |

Re: Crack in Clutch Housing
A new part might set you back $10. That if you can't find one for $5. But except during braking, the forces are primarily "forward." And during braking, the forces are "back" but limited by the coefficient of friction between your tires and road.
Washer sounds like it would work. Drive on. Joe K

Re: Crack in Clutch Housing
I see no problems other than appearance. I have several AA bellhousings that are commonly used for the T-5, T-10 conversion that have the same issue. Usable as long as you don't mind using a washer on that hole. Rod
